Default Wimbledon Worried About Match Fixing
Report: Wimbledon worried about match-fixing

The English newspaper The Independent is reporting that Wimbledon officials will be scrutinizing the play of at least six players for signs of match-fixing when the tournament begins on Monday.

Gambling on sports is legal throughout England, and there have been concerns in tennis in recent years about irregular betting patterns showing up on some matches.

The Independent says the "watch list" may include as many as 12 players from several nations, including some ranked in the top 50.

The newspaper says a Russian spectator has been arrested in the Netherlands for illegally wagering at courtside during the Monday Ordina Open match between Spain's Oscar Hernandez and Austria's Daniel Koellerer.

The Independent says ATP president Adam Helfant gave the newspaper this statement: "Since January 2008 the ATP, Grand Slams, ITF and Sony Ericsson WTA Tour have had a Tennis Integrity Unit led by Jeff Rees. All related matters are dealt with by his unit and we don't intend to comment on any allegations or media stories."

None of the 6-12 players identified, just this:
The Independent understands the full "watch list" includes Russians, Argentines, Italians, Spaniards and players of other nationalities, including men from inside the top 50 as well as those at the lower reaches of the game.

I have heard it before, but with all the little things that online betting allows to be fixed, I don't know why whole matches need to be fixed. When I start fixing stuff, I'll just pay Player X to lose the first game at love, for which you can get like 8-1 odds, usually.

Is that code for "We're watching Davydenko... and maybe some others, I guess."?

In the past I think it's been clay courters targeted for match fixing at Wimbledon, especially when they face Brits.

So if one of the players in the "watch list" has a bad day at the office and loses to a qualifier, will we have a new scandal?

I think it's safe to say that if you are wagering on a Hernandez/Koellerer match, you have a gambling problem, and some sort of intervention is appropriate.
