I have to break a little from the current here and say that there is hardly a grand slam final match up in the WTA that I could be happier to be missing. Honestly, these two do so little for me, it's not just the casual fans who are feeling pretty blah about this matchup between two players with unattractive styles of play and a combined 1-4 record in previous slam finals.
Will the winner be a "deserving" titleist? Without doubt. They will have won seven matches in the main draw, and that's the criteria for winning a slam. Will anyone care? Not anyone but a hardcore tennis fan, I'd have to think. |

I echo Moose's and other's point (and that Faith No More song): we care a lot!
It's not a matter of ratings and players that the public doesn't recognize, it's tennis, it's RG, and it's two top 10 players that have had a great clay-court season and totally deserve to be there. Though the first part only -it's tennis- should be enough. |

Because I'm not a big fan of either player, it's hard for me to choose a side here. If Dina wins, she legitimizes her reign as world number one. If Sveta wins, she gets the monkey off her back about being a one slam wonder.
Personally, I think that this is Sveta's big chance. She's always played incredibly well on clay and has had a lot of chances to win this title over the last few years. So in my heart, I'd like to see Sveta get over the hump and win. But at the end of the day, I just hope this match doesn't suck. |

I care.
This is the French Open. One of 4 slams. This is the finals where two players will bash it out or screw it up in order to take the title of Champion and a cool 1 million dollars. What's not important? I think it is tasteless and disrespectful to come up with these kind of proclaimations and articles right when the final is going to happen. If the writer of that article is so bored with women's tennis, well then, he doesn't have to watch does he? And tennis...for those of us that are TENNIS FANS...and not casual observers / followers of the sport....tennis will always have it's thrills, even when Sharapova and the Williams Sisters retire. I bet there were people who thought tennis couldn't survive after Martina Navs, BJK, Chrissie and Steffi.....but look! And we have a whole crop of youngsters that are itching to take over the reigns of the top of the tennis world and every year, every other year...we get a new crop. Even if they don't perform the way we want them to....they are there. Tennis will go on. And it will STILL be exciting. No matter your name...no matter how known, unknown you are, no matter how old, how young, what country you re from, no matter your RANKING....if you SURVIVE SEVEN ROUNDS OF tennis in the conditions that players battled at Roland Garros....hell you deserve to be called a Champion and you deserve to have everyone recognize that you are a champion. Tennis will go on Seven years from now...they will be saying the same thing about Ana, Jelena, Dinara and maybe even Azarenka |

I think the article states some unfortunate but obvious facts about the WTA. For dyed in the wool tennis fans - most of us here - we do care and no matter how we feel we'll be watching.
I don't blame Dinara and Sveta for their "lack of charisma" with the general sports public. The blame falls squarely on the tour and the image makers for promoting only one woman as opposed to promoting the WOMEN of the tour. Some of you know I've been ranting about this for a couple of years now. There is nothing wrong with either woman. They were just not labeled "golden" and made the face of the tour. I shudder to think what would have happened to Steffi Graf or Monica Seles in today's "image is everything" environment. The lack of butts in the seats is a direct result of the skewed marketing practices of the WTA over the last few years. The other problem is the tennis factories academies which have produced a crop of young women who fit the same mold. They play alike, look alike, and while they're competitive watching them is boring. There is no nuance, no personality in their play. Kim Clijsters just talked about this in an interview with the BBC. I followed the RG Twitter alerts and updates this time. They always talk about seats being available the day before an event and this is for both Friday and today. I know that they said there are seats available for tomorrow. I'll have to see if they say there are seats available for Sunday. |
