Ok... maybe I still don't appreciate the level of emotional investment some people have in players. I don't get it.

I mean... I "kind of like" to see Rafa win. He work undeniably hard for them, and takes nothing for granted even when his fans do, which I really value in a player.

I "kind of like" to see Roger not totally eclipse everyone's accomplishments. I don't hate him or anything like that. It's just that my pet peeve is smugness, which he seems to encapsulate more than some other players (Wimbledon's monogram and outfit and such screamed "This is MY tournament" to me... I had a problem briefly with Djokovic too for the similar reasons but he's much better now along with Fed). I have no problem seeing Roger win anything (when he works for it, I don't like competitive blase) as long as all of the other players don't get pushed aside and ignored. That is also my problem with GOAT-like debates... they smack of hubris to me as well. Any "X is the bestest ever" that isn't meant ironically, really.

That's about as far as I go as far as emotional investment. A little twinge when things go one way or the other. I'm much more tied into my own life.

I like to see high quality matches, and will only rarely be turned off from certain players, usually for personality reasons. I can get "pumped up" by watching a fantastic match.

I hope that makes some sense. I did want to state what my opinions on this whole heated rivalry and side-taking were somewhere.

LOL. For a second, before I closely looked at the date, I was trying to recall when this happened. Nicely done

Easy answer.

Wimbledon 2008.

It knocked me out for days.

It's hard not to get emotionally invested in players bith positively and negatively.

Honestly, great for you. I'm kind of in a sad state, so mentally invested in my tennis faves.

That depressed me for weeks too, and must be the only Fed match for me. ...But ALL of Venus matches especially the AO this year left me really gutted for months.

Justine losing to Bartoli, Wimbledon 2007.
Federer losing to Nadal in last year's Wimbledon final. I don't care how great the match was, I never want to see it. And I don't want to read Wertheim's book, even though I like him a lot, but reading about the match that I think of as the beginning of the end- no, thank you.
While Bartoli's win is STILL a tennis fan life highlight .....I love Jon Wertheim's writing. Venus Envy is probably my favorite tennis book of all time. And I am never going to read this Rafa Wimbledon book of his.

Part of me WISHES that I could be like this. (And, HEY, I'm tied into my and my man's life, too. But, I hear ya. ) BUT- for all the loony ups and downs that V, Roger, Monica, Ashe, BJK (etc., etc.) have provided form.....when there have been tennis periods when I haven't had clear favorites- I just have not enjoyed tennis nearly as much. Guess I need the adrenaline?!?!?

Very interesting perspective nevertheless, James. And I also hear you that a great match is ALWAYS a blast to watch- regardless of if your favorites are playing/winning or not. Great tennis is just a joy.

Default Nightmare Loss
Inspired by Rafa losing to (of all ******* people!) Robin Soderling, what single loss by your favorite player is the one you still can't get over?

For me, even as high quality as it was, I have never rewatched the Wimbledon '05 women's final. Ever.
