A little bit more of her comments from another article. You gotta admit, Seren has a way with words. Between the "fine us if we're dead", and the furniture comment below...

Angry Williams Quits Madrid Open

Serena Williams quit her first-round Madrid Open match against Francesca Schiavone saying she had to protect an injured knee - and her finances.

Williams, who pulled out after losing the first set 6-4, has been critical of the WTA Tour's policy on injuries.

"I don't really have a choice whether to play," said Williams, who has said players would be fined for not playing even if they were dead.

She added: "I'm not into throwing away thousands and thousands of dollars."

The world number two - second seed in Madrid - said she was currently remodelling a house and said: "I don't know about anyone else but $75,000 is a lot of money to me.

"That's like my whole furniture bill, and some stairs, rugs."

However, she insisted her injury would not affect her chances of playing in the French Open later in May.

"I didn't want to risk my chances to play Roland Garros," she said.

"I wanted to do well [here], but at the end of the day I'm trying to play Paris and still trying to play singles and doubles there so I didn't really want to take that chance and be out of Roland Garros."

Just when Serena has solidified her position on my bad side, the Fierce Stomping Diva I always liked comes out of hiding and takes names. It's about time a high-profile player stood up and smacked the WTA upside the head.

Unfortunately, she's about a year too late.

I wonder if these remarks are going to get her a fine? Seeing as the WTA has basically become a police state.

I'm reading Monica's book and she can't underscore enough that tennis is a business, pure and simple. Serena is just speaking what most player are probably feeling but aren't quite the draw (or as wealthy) that Serena is so they stay mum. The WTA and it's sponsors didn't do crap for Monica because she wasn't making them money.

Interesting that suddenly $75,000 is a lot of money to Serena, when a few years ago she was bitching that the AO prize money was only $600,000. I guess the economy is affecting everyone!

But all snideness aside, allez to someone taking a big crack at the WTA like that.

The tour isn't the only one focusing on themselves. Each player is worried only about herself . If they would put aside those concerns for a minute, and stand up together as the union they are supposed to be, they could change things. But, an isolated comment from A. Radwanska here, and a comment from Serena there, just won't cut it. They should have stood up at least two years ago when this Roadmap was in the works.

The men seem to see the forest through the trees. They see an injustice, like what almost happened to Monte Carlo, and enough of them stood up to challenge it. They did it fast, too.

Most people whine about their jobs to some degree. I "retired" from my job today due to absolute stupidity and incompetence on other peoples part. I'll be back tomorrow at my job but they will be getting a Serena style smackdown from me also. I sometimes think the WTA forgets that without the players they are nothing.

Did the men also told the ATP to distribute the money better at Indian Wells instead of lump it at the top?
