Just a quick question here.....Since Larry Scott is the beautiful engineer behind roadmap and he is gone baby, gone! isn't it possible for the new head of WTA to do away with it? Or better yet....amend it to include medical / injury exemptions with no punishment? I mean, look at Peer. She cannot afford the fine of not playing, she too played injured and had to withdraw....there has to be something they can do because this is a dangerous way to force players to be at the tournaments......

Probably not, Shahar's draw as an ex military Israeli soldier has lost it's lustre and she's been dropping in the rankings. They don't seem to care, she's not such a good investment any longer to them so they will most likely let her go. If Azarenka doesn't start putting up better results she'll probably be the next one to go down. They'll play you up as long you are beating top 5ers as soon as that stops it's later gater. Oh and Shahar doesn't have the model type looks that seem to transfix the WTA. |

Oh and Shahar doesn't have the model type looks that seem to transfix the WTA. When Larry Scott was gushing over roadmap, he was also gushing over Sharapova. I remember she did one of her "doodle" things about how Larry called her up on the phone while she was shopping to get her approval over the roadmap. He was touting the roadmap AND Sharapova equally as the future of the WTA. (Haha) Well, Sharapova's been out longer than 9months with her injury......and roadmap is a dismal undertaking. These players are injured and they have no recourse except to play or face a heavy fine or more so something NEEDS to change and regarding this...it shouldn't matter if you are ranked 5 or if you are ranked 50........ If Larry Scott can get away with something as drastic as roadmap, then the new head can do something NOT so drastic and commit to a few changes to help those players that are injured (legitimately so). |

Shahar has been going downward since she lost against Serena at 2007 AO when she was serving for the match. Cornet hasn't been the same mentally since that match at the Aussie Open where she lost to Dinara....even if it takes her a year.....she'll be back. And Peer has...an okay game. What I like about her is that.....she's a grit your teeth fighter. She fights and it's saved her plenty of times against players that have more to offer than she does. She may not be top ten stuff, but she can still have a pretty solid tennis career. |

I bet they still write about Shahar in Israel and will continue to do so until something better comes along. No reason to hype her elsewhere, though. Why all the disrespect towards Peer? It's not as if she's the greatest tennis player in the world, but she isn't Brie Whitehead either |

If you are the top tennis player in your country and have broken barriers that no one has broken before, I'd bet they'd write about you too. |

It isn't just for Peer...it's for ALL of the players they didn't treat Serena any differently from Peer 1. Pleasing certain tournament directors unhappy top players were either not playing or pulling out of their events. 2. $ from China. |

Serena hits out at WTA
Reuters Monday, May 11, 2009 Madrid: World No.2 Serena Williams hit out at the WTA Tour injuries policy on Sunday, commenting that players would be fined for pulling out of a tournament even if they were dead. The American 10-times Grand Slam winner was asked why she played at last month's Andalucia Tennis Championships when she had clearly not recovered from a thigh problem that hampered her in the final of the Sony Ericsson Open the previous week. "Unfortunately it doesn't matter if you're injured, if you're dead or if you're alive, if you don't play they're going to fine you heavily," Williams said at a news conference ahead of this week's Madrid Open. "So I have to play whether I am injured or not. That's just how it is so I have no choice." Williams suffered a shock defeat to Klara Zakopalova of the Czech Republic in the first round in Marbella having lost heavily to Belarussian teenager Victoria Azarenka in Miami. The WTA introduced a new Roadmap for 2009 designed to reduce the number of tournaments and shorten the season to make it less physically demanding on the players. Top-10 players must still compete in at least 10 of the 20 Premier events - previously known as Tier I and II tournaments - and the four Grand Slams and are also obliged to play the events at Indian Wells, Miami, Madrid and Beijing. Justine Henin's retirement last year at the age of 25 highlighted the problem of burnout. http://www.dnaindia.com/report.asp?newsid=1254880 |
