Default Novak/Roger: WHO YA GOT?
Didn't we just have a Djok/Fed WYG? Oh yeah, Miami. Remind me, who won that one?

Anyway, what I think has become an entertaining rivalry. And tomorrow's semi pits last year's champion here at Rome against World #2 in what could easily be called a battle for bragging rights as #2 clay player in the world right now. Fed's last years RG finalist, Nole is the only person besides Rafa to win a Masters Series shield on clay in the last two years.

Add in the fact that these two might not be each other's BFF. And that Roger hasn't won a Master's Event in a couple of years. And that Nole has never defended a title. All kinds of stories accompany this one.

We know the H2H history - 7-3, Roger. 2 of those matches on clay, at Monte Carlo, both won by Roger (another backstory - Nole has never beaten Roger on clay). Novak took their last match at Miami, driving Roger, holder of 38 hardcourt titles, to say he was glad the early hardcourt season was over.

If Roger cringes and carps when he's introduced as World #2, what's gonna happen when they begin saying #3? Because it's coming. Soon.

Novak in 3. Ajde!

the heart says fed. the head says it's fed's to win or lose. and if fed could win in 3 that would help his confidence that he can close out matches against the big boys.

so fed in 3. go fed!

For Fed's sake, Fed in 3. Otherwise he is going to completely melt down. With too many (by his standards) recent losses to all top 3 in hard. Now losing on clay to Djokovic would be hard.

Shouldn't there be a swine flu option?

I've detected a pattern in Nole/Roger WYGs. The Nole voters turn out early and give him a quick lead. Then the Roger voters show up and send him off to a commanding lead.

What that means, I have no idea.

The leading choice right now, "Roger in 3", seems to me a little unlikely. Lately, Roger has had a hard time holding his nerve in the deciding set. Last time he did it was I guess against Roddick in Miami, and then too he got a little help from the net court.

Advantage Nole, in my book... But I'm just plain thrilled that both are playing well right now... Especially in light of the fact that Rafa seems to be just a hair off the bubble right now. Makes things more interesting.

This claycourt season is extremely intriguing. You've got Andy Murray showing glimpses of good stuff from time to time. Del Potro is always dangerous. Gonzo and Monaco are playing well.

This could prove to be the most ingriguing claycourt season in recent years if these guys can keep it up. Sure, Rafa is still a heavy favorite... But still, it's a nifty time in the men's game!

Okay, so based on what has transpired since my last post, I reserve the right to take back my quip about Gonzo playing well.

I've got Nole in straights unless he insults Roger in some way.

I think Roger takes seeing Nole on the other side of the net as an insult. Especially late in a big event.

You can leave it there, he just won.

You know, maybe Monaco got a hair passive when he was up 40-0 in his last service game. But why not? You can usually count on Gonzo for one more error in one of the next three points. But Gonzo serious stepped it up. And got the break.

That was an extremely entertaining match... Maybe the match of the tournament thus far. Good, good stuff for the most part.

I just temporarily tipped the scales to the Fed side. More out of hope than out of any confidence.
