Default Coria Retires
Guillermo Coria, 27, officialized his retirement today.

http://www.infobae.com/contenidos/44...ró-Willy-Coria

After trying to return he called it quits. "I'm very happy with the decision." he explained.

He also said that he no longer felt the desire to compete.

"I've taken the decision that I'm not going to play again. I had been thinking about it for a few months. In Thailand I realized that I had trouble travelling, it wasn't only the serve."

He will devote himself to his family and projects (tennis clinics and Tv commentator).

Such a shame this kid. The mother of all mental cases. How can one lose himself and his game so quickly...

We need a new contest, analog to the Racquet Tossing one: The Mental Case Awards, the statue being a replica of Coria losing at RG.

Poor guy. I guess he can just take comfort in having achieved the success he did. Otherwise those demons'll get him.

Now I feel bad for wishing, well, this fate on him years ago. Bad Bea.

Head case? Think I missed that part of the story.

I liked him. I felt SO badly for him when he cramped up at the French Open final and couldn't move any more.

this FO final was probably the most heartbreaking final I have ever watched. I actually started out rooting for Gaudio, but felt just terrible for Coria in the end...

Who knows where his career would have gone if not for the injuries and the unfortunate vitamin case?

He should be proud of where he got and the beautiful tennis he showed.

2006 called and wants its headline back.

(Sorry to break up the nice comments. Good luck Coria!)

That was my first thought. To be honest, I'll miss Carla more than I will El Mago. Just never developed an appreciation for him. And aside from the French, the big standout in my mind was the '05 USO quarters, when he double-faulted the match to Ginepri.

His story is so unfortunate. He really could have won RG in '03, '04 and '05 but one thing or another got in his way. I always loved his style of play, though. Very fun to watch.

The same with me. I didn't know much about Coria when I was watching the match. Gaudio's comeback attempt gripped me, and I started rooting for him. The fourth set was the most bizarre set ever. And then at the end of the fifth set, I went back to rooting for Coria but it was too late by then.

This is so sad.

And I actually was rooting for him in that RG final, from start to finish. He had the best clay season and deserved that title. But, I never once thought that one chance was just that.

Coria seemed kind of like a prima donna to me. His game was okay...on clay. One of the funniest matches I ever saw was him against Agassi at the Aussie Open. Agassi seriously ran him back and forth for about 2 hours, and by the 3rd set, Coria just gave up. Defaulted the match and went back to the wonderful AC of his hotel room.

as shtexas said i certainly never imagined that coria would only have the one shot at glory. on clay he was a genius, could not be touched. or at least so i thought at the time.

sad that he'll likely be remembered, not for reaching the fo final, but for choking it away, or for his ban. or for hot carla...

If I had Carla waiting for me in an air conditioned hotel room, I might be tempted to default a match as well.

I will always remember the Coria/Agassi match where Mary Carillo wouldn't stop flapping about him cutting his hand with a knife while separating a bagel.

I'm right there with you tinamarie. I started rooting for Gaudio but I also felt that Coria would one day (maybe the next year) win one. Everytime I see/hear that match talked about (like the top 5 chokes on the tennis channel), I feel his pain all over again and I wish he could have somehow won that one.

I always feel angry for both of them when that match is brought up. Gaudio was no accidenal winner and Coria couldn't have known this was his only chance. The injuries and other stuff that destroyed the rest of their careers just add to the heartbreak.

No, we wasn't. Yes, Coria gagged, but the way Gaudio got into the final was a story in and of itself. He had to come from two sets to one down in his first round against Canas. I'll never forget Gaudio sitting in his chair and weeping when he beat Nalbandian in the semifinal. He could've grown a small garden on the dirt that day.

Fragments of his press conference where he broke down and cried:

As the minutes went by, the former number three of the world became emotional and, between tears, said: "I started receiving hits, and when I went to sleep, I'd feel regret."

"I didn't have that maliciousness of wanting to beat the rival. I went on to be the good guy on the court. And to achieve things you have to have that instinct of wanting to defeat your rival."

"I was not having a good time on court. I had trouble getting motivated." He also recognized that the whole doping issue hit him hard and that he didn't rule out playing Bs As '10 as his final farewell.
