I think people have a hard time accepting this one for the same reason they have a hard time accepting it when she was #2. She was only recently merely a top 20 player. She set up camp there, that's how we know her. Personally I think she'll crack under the pressure just like the Serbs did. But she definitely earned the points to get there.

I'd imagine Kuznetsova is on suicide watch right now.

Didn't you hear? Dry's going to be a father.
Drop, if you weren't such a godless heathen, you'd quickly recognize this for what it is--another virgin birth.

Bow and repent, you sinner.

Sure is!
Oh my, I had forgotten this was a love triangle.

Let's get an appointment with Jerry Springer:

"You love me for my medals"

*Should Springer not be available, Stepanek will suffice.

It could have been a love square, somehow ADAM must have been involved! Paternity test on Maury Povich coming soon! Who is the father of all of these medals?

Back to the thread, Congrats Dinara! Dinara is #1 for now, but this is the WTA where number one changes as often as Verdasco changes girlfriends!

Maybe they can revise the ranking system to include spunk and looks.
Seriously.

What. The. Hell.

Let's just consider her statement an apology for everything. She's sorry she hasn't won a Slam, she's sorry she's sucked lately, she's sorry she's not pretty or spunky enough for you. Okay? Are we good? Awesome. Moving on.

I find consistency under-appreciated

Congrats, Dina! (and don't apologize for your achievements)

In my old age, I'm starting to change my attitude about this debate. I'm starting to lean more toward NOT criticizing the player who accidentally backs into the #1 spot and instead asking why the other players haven't stepped up and made such debates a moot point.

So to me, it's becoming more about:

1) Serena not playing a full schedule and not being consistent
2) Venus--let's start with TEN SET POINTS! And she's not consistent, either, though she seems to be getting a little more consistent in her results.
3) Ana has been off her bubble ever since she hurt her thumb, but things are looking up.
4) Maria is injured.

So for every stone we're going to throw at Dina for being #1 without winning a major, we should throw one at the top three as well. They haven't done their part. Though that wasn't true of Serena until this week. So let's just throw a little pebble at her.

We all know that Safina is not the best tennis player in the world. I think winning a major sould be criteria. But nobody should give her a hard time. It's not her fault. The system is a joke.

That's a wrap.

Dinara will win slams eventually.

I want to point out that Dinara didn't get the top spot by playing a lot of tournaments. She's played 19 to Serena's 16. Dinara got the top spot by making two slam finals, winning a silver medal, and winning three tier Is.
