Default How do you solve a problem like Jelena?
Yes, feel free to hum the tune from The Sound of Music as you read the thread title!

Seriously though... If you're Jelena Jankovic, what do you do now? The start of 2009 has basically been nothing short of a disaster. Her game is off. Everyone feels like they can break her largely at will. The enthusiasm isn't there.

If she doesn't turn it around, I'm afraid she's going to find herself racking up results very similar to where she was a few years back.

don't you think it's a tad early to be playing a dirge, Dry.

Throw in her Fed Cup results, and she's 9-3 on the season, I think. Fourth round of a slam, losing to Bartoli, who has troubled her in the past. Semis of Paris, where she lost to the tournament winner, while beating a player who she had lost to 4 straight times on hard courts (Na Li). And Kaia is certainly no slouch.

She's trying to do some things different with her serve. I think that's a good thing. It's not there right now, and she needs to keep working. And is she playing as well as she is capable of? Certainly not. Same with almost everyone in the top ten, short of Serena and Vera.

But to think this is going down the road of 10 straight first round losses like 2006, I don't see it at all.

Don't mean to play the Death March yet, Moose. I'm just worried.

So you're saying the bad patch is related to working on long-term solutions that will make her more competive in the future. That may be.

I like Jelena. And I don't like how things are going. I took her in predictions because I thought this was going to be the week where she'd turn it around, right the ship, so to speak. I'm just really disappointed in how things are going for her right now. It's more fun with her in the mix.

I think she's trying to make some pretty major changes to her game, and even her body (much more built up top than she used to be) that she's not quite used to yet. If she doesn't pick up the results around the clay season, that's when I'll start worrying; not before.

It took Dementieva a few years to get her serve sorted out. It's still not GREAT, but she certainly has come a long way. I don't think it will take Jelena THAT long in this case, but you never know when you're making serious, fundamental changes to your game or your body. Jelena's motion is sound, unlike how Dementieva's was... She's always had the bigger serve; she just doesn't use it when things get tight.

But it might take longer than a few months. I hope not.

I do like Jelena, but I think her career is going to have major peaks and valleys...she's way too moody on the court to be in the Top 5 consistently, IMO. That said, she'll still be there quite a bit.

It's not a terrible start, but it's definitely not a top 5 start. She's 12th in the race so far.

She will recover. I think her game is solid enough to stay around where she is now for some time. Maybe drop to around top 5. If anything, I would worry far more for Ana I. than for Jelena.

I dunno... Elena never did anything for me. She looks good in general, but maybe too general?

Sure, Ana can look awesome (and usually does). But what separates them to me is their personality.Jelena has far more of that.
