Default Fed Cup: World Group I&II play-off draws
World Group I play-offs

Spain vs Serbia
France vs Slovak Republic
Germany vs China
Argentina vs Ukraine

(Way too much luck for Argentina and Ukraine and way too little for France and Slovak Republic)

World Group II play-offs

Belgium vs Canada
Estonia vs Israel
Poland vs Japan
Australia vs Switzerland

I think it will be Serbia, France, Germany, Ukraine, Belgium, Estonia, Poland and Australia.

Agree with all except Canada is going to find a way not to play Zonals in 2010. Also, agree that the winner of Argentina/Ukraine are lucky.

Are they any good on clay? The slowest clay in the solar system? Surely it will be played on something approaching it.

At least we were lucky not to draw Serbia. Poor Spain, that's a hard one and CSN is really going to feel bad now.

Allez la France ! :bleus:

Does this mean that Belgium is hosting the tie? Is the first team in each pairing above the host for the tie?

(Wozniak would not strike me as being a good clay court player. But I really don't know anything about the Belgians.)

Really Belgians are no good either, but at home I still give them a tiny advantage (51-49).

Who is going to play for the Belgians. Yanina and Kirsten aren't bad players. They both have the ability to get hot for a moment and show some really good stuff.

Fed Cup's upper draw is so tiny. Is this the right scenario?

Four teams already in the 2009 semis are guaranteed top group for 2010. The four winners of the WGI play-off matches make up the remaining 2010 quarterfinals/first round.

What do the winners of the WGII playoffs get? NEXT YEAR they each play ties against one of the four losers of the WGI '09 playoffs for the chance to play one of the 2010 QF losers for the chance to be in the 2011 QFs? Is this correct?

Now my head hurts, but that would explain why it's taken a country like Serbia so long to get near the top group.

Yes, you can only move up one "level" per year. World Group I (eight teams) is the top level, World Group II (eight teams) is the second level, the zonal groups are the third level.

It looks like Serbia's problem is that they've struggled to get out of the zonal group. In 2006 they lost to Israel in the zonal 1st-to-4th (whatever that is) playoff (Peer defeated Ivanovic, and Jankovic didn't play). In 2007, they got to the World Group II playoff, but lost 4-1 to the Czech Republic (Hantuchova, Cibulkova) as Ivanovic didn't play.

Serbia has no depth . They have two of the top five (ten?, fifteen?) players in the world, but if one of them can't play, their next singles player is a BIG step down.

True...but look at some of the teams that played this week in the qfs. Most would've given anything to have either Jelena or Ana. (ex. US & Argentina)
