I hope I'm wrong, not because I have anything against Serena, but just because I think it would give Dinara so much confidence to win a match like this. Dinara has come so far. I would love to see her win a Slam someday. It's not happening tonight/tomorrow, however. |

I still remember the very first time I ever saw Dinara play. It was against Serena, at the USO in 2002, a 2nd round night match. It was a massacre, Serena won 60 61. What I remember most about the match was that in the 2nd set, Dinara smacked a huge ace. Serena had this look like "you're doing that. To me?" And Dinara actually held up her hand and practically apologized for acing her. It was adorable. After Serena destroyed her, she met her at the net with a big smile and I distinctly made out the words, "Hey, girl", like a big sister, and as if she were telling Dinara that match was just a learning experience. Serena is not as evil as some would imply. |

Dinara's best chance is if she serves well. Her first serve is up there with the best of them, but when she is forced to hit a lot of second serves she will double fault.
Also, one thing that really hurt Lena was her inability to finish off points. She just kept trying to hit really hard, with no real purpose behind a lot of her shots. Dinara has a lot more power and weight on her groundies and needs to step in and use her angles. She, however, needs to use her up the line shots more to beat Serena. I felt as if she barely used them against Bepa, especially on her forehand. She would go inside out, but if Bepa hit cross court to Dinara's forehand the ball went back cross court every time. Another thing is moving forward. She can't be afraid to move forward on some smart shot selections. Serena is too fast and too explosive on her shots to keep in rallies. As shown in her last match, Serena can just flatten out shots and crush them at will and Dinara, just as Serena's past opponents, won't be able to handle them. Getting to the net and shortening the points won't give Serena the chance. The most important thing, however, for Dinara is key for every match, winning the big points. If she can have a high break point conversion percentage it only makes it easier. Same with serving it out, she just needs to look at what happened to Sveta and Lena when they were broken. Lots of second serves and defensive play. If Dinara can construct her points and finish them, serve well, and take her chances she can win the match. Needless to say, Serena in 2. |
