This is the thread for all news related to the Australian Open. General tennis news should be in the "Not Faux" news thread.
There are a couple of things floating around already - Fed's comments about Andy Murray, and Bernard Tomic's father going a-Tomic again, that probably should be here. Going forward there will be one news thread per Slam. |

This was already posted in the "Not Faux" thread and there were a couple of comments.
A Tomic blast for Rasheed as fallout builds over comments David Lewis January 14th, 2009 ANGRY John Tomic, father of Gold Coast star in the making Bernard Tomic, has launched a blistering attack on Lleyton Hewitt's former mentor Roger Rasheed, claiming he is a fitness conditioner masquerading as a coach. Stung by remarks from Rasheed questioning the awarding of a wildcard to his 16-year-old son at next week's Australian Open, Tomic Sr belittled the record of Rasheed, who he claimed was largely responsible for Hewitt's spectacular fall down the world rankings. Speaking from Melbourne yesterday where reigning national junior champion Tomic Jr is preparing for next week's Open, Tomic Sr said: "Roger Rasheed is not a coach, he's a fitness conditioner. "He took Lleyton Hewitt from No.2 in the world to No.60 and I think that (Frenchman) Gael Monfils (Rasheed's latest protege) should be very careful because he could find himself struggling too pretty soon." Monfils, who is to contest the Australian Open, has an ATP ranking of 18. Rasheed coached Hewitt for nearly five years before the pair parted company just over 12 months ago. Rasheed and Tomic Sr have been at loggerheads since Rasheed urged Tennis Australia to sanction both father and son after Tomic Sr ordered his boy to walk off court in Perth last month after being enraged by an umpire not punishing an opponent's foot faults. Rasheed further infuriated Tomic Sr when he said his behaviour in Perth was 'not on' and that Tennis Australia should take a 'firm hand because the situation with Bernard and his father is out of control'. Tomic Sr said that the weight of expectation on his son did not weigh heavily on the boy. "He just has to go and enjoy the ball, hit the ball with freedom and he will fulfil his potential as a top 10 player." http://www.goldcoast.com.au/article/...ast-sport.html |

Roger Federer questions Andy Murray being installed as favourite with British bookies
January 13, 2009 ROGER Federer has backed his own chances for lifting a fourth Australian Open title while marvelling that British bookies are tipping untried Andy Murray for the trophy. "Murray's the favourite? good for him, but it doesn't help him a lot," said the Swiss player at the presentation of the eight-man Kooyong Classic, considered the top tune-up for the grand slam starting on Monday. But after losing twice to the Scot this month, once at an unofficial exhibition and in the Doha ATP semi-finals, Federer does give the number four player his due. "He's put himself into a great position," said the 13-time grand slam champion who could pull level on the all-time best of 14 held by Pete Sampras with a title in Melbourne. "He's playing well and finished well last year. "But I'm surprised that the bookies say he's the favourite. "He's never won a slam, it's surprising to hear." http://www.foxsports.com.au/story/0,...002324,00.html |

Sveta in Doubt for AO.
Kuznetsova in doubt for AO Rob O\'Gorman Wednesday 14 January 2009 Svetlana Kuznetsova is in doubt for the Australian Open after withdrawing from her quarterfinal match at the Medibank International Sydney today. The Russian suffered an abdominal strain in her second round win over Estonia’s Kaia Kanepi on Tuesday and after warming up this morning, she opted to hand quarterfinal opponent Ai Sugiyama a walkover. “I felt it a little bit before, but I thought, well, it’s just tight muscle. Now every time I start to pull it feels worse and worse. Yesterday I could manage to finish and win the match [but] I went to warm-up today and it was worse,” she told the media. “For the moment physio’s telling me to rest two days maybe, not to do anything. Maybe don’t play tennis also.” “Then I’ll start to play little by little. I [will] do MRI on site tomorrow to figure out what I have there and see how it can be managed to cure this problem to be better for Melbourne.” It’s not the first time Kuznetsova has suffered the injury having played the 2006 French Open final with a similar ailment. “I played French Open all tournament with this injury serving slowly,” she said. “I know what it is, and I cannot let myself injure it even worse. I have to be careful, and especially [because the] Grand Slam’s next week.” “I need to see two, three days how it’s recovering. It’s not terribly bad like I cannot laugh. I can laugh. The only thing, I cannot serve, and sometimes backhand is tough.” The former US Open champion said it was disappointing to suffer an injury so close to the Australian Open. “I’m very disappointed because I [have] been working very hard pre‑season. I wanted to go out there today so much and play.” “It’s very hard to take this decision, because me, to convince myself that I have an injury, it’s really tough.” The Australian Open begins on Monday January 19. http://www.medibankinternational.com...r-ao#more-1440 |

I love Fed but hearing him say stuff like this, is beginning to get on my nerves. He should be happy the pressure is on Murray thus making it easier to play more freely (I think) and do what he has to do on court to prove doubters wrong.
He is sounding more and more bitter every time I read these recent articles. I know it's hard letting go of the top but he knew it was bound to happen. Foxy |

Fed wants to push back the AO to Feb. It actually makes sense. While logical, this would be like asking the USTA to move the US Open off of Labor Day weekend. As for the US Open, it's been suggested that it be moved a week or two earlier as to not conflict with football, it is not going to happen. |
