Default German Open dropped from WTA Calendar
German Open cancelled, says WTA
By Pritha Sarkar

LONDON, Jan 14 (Reuters) - The German Open women’s tournament in Berlin has been cancelled, the WTA said on Wednesday.

“The tournament won’t be on the 2009 calendar but the tournament being scrapped has nothing to do with the global credit crunch,” a WTA spokeswoman said.

“The Qatar Tennis Federation, owner of the Berlin tournament membership, has made the decision that they no longer wish to operate the German Open in Berlin and to sell the membership back to the Tour.”

The claycourt event usually takes place in May and has been one of the traditional warm-up tournaments for the French Open

I know there was going to be casualties on the calendar in the wake of Roadkill, and I know there are economic issues (despite what the promoters say), but I'm genuinely saddened by the elimination of this event.

I used to love this phase of the calendar, when clay season was in full gear, and the men and ladies would switch up playing Germany and Italy, and both events were huge (Masters Series/Tier 1s). Know many of the ladies complained about weather conditions in Germany this time of year, and it seemed that more of the top players were finding excuses not to play the German in the last few years, but it's still sad to see what was at one time a premiere event going away.

This event has been in danger for several years already. Ever since it was sold to Arabs...

Think the last straw for the backers was when it was placed a week before the French Open.

That makes sense. Although I bet it was SUPPOSED to be a bit of a concession to them: it no longer had Tier I status, but there are no limits on top 8 players playing events the week before a Slam, correct?

Yep!

Sad to see it go. More to come, I'm afraid.

Replace it with Zurich, who was dropped, effective this year.
