No surprise really, but I think this deserves a separate thread...
EXCLUSIVE NEXT week's Australian Open has been rocked by the withdrawal of defending champion Maria Sharapova. Sharapova's management contacted Melbourne Park officials today with news her right shoulder injury had not fully recovered. Australian Open tournament director Craig Tiley confirmed Sharapova's battle for fitness had been lost. "I'm obviously disappointed for Maria because she's extremely disappointed," Tiley said. "We've been in constant contact with Maria and she's decided to withdraw because she's not ready in her rehabilitation process. http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/sto...-11088,00.html |

This is news to me because I already thought Sharapova was out. I don't know why. Maybe I made it up in my mind? I do that sometimes.
Maria missing Melbourne doesn't bother me; but Nadia... that's sad stuff. And I hope they're wrong. Maybe this was a knee-jerk reaction on her part after seeing she drew Alize in Syndey? |

By the way I bookmarked this post at wtw (#36) dealing with technical aspects of Maria's game and why she is so prone to injuries. It's well above my ability to dissect, but perhaps some you who play regularly and/or have some background in medicine can. http://www.tennisforum.com/showthrea...7#post14687887 |

According to Maria's site she did undergo a minor shoulder surgery and the reason she pulled out of Hong Kong was because she wasn't ready, so I guess, that her pulling out of the Aussie is for the same reason. There's really no sense in rushing back too fast and reinjure something that was recently repaired.
But this is a total bummer. |

No surprise really, but I think this deserves a separate thread... Maria's forehand swing stands out to me because that twist backward thing she does will kill her shoulder when she comes back. I think that Maria should follow what the Williamses have done, when she comes back to the tour. Which is to only play key events. I hope Maria recovers but it won't be easy at all. |

I officially started out like Maria when they were crucifying her for her grunts/screeching before Wimbledon so I guess I've always had a soft spot for her.
Anyway I did not expect that this withdrawal would affect me this hard. Two consecutive slams miss after such a great start to 2008 does not look good but I hope I'm wrong. Get well soon Maria! Foxy |

I am not a Maria fan, but the thing is that WTA is becoming somewhat weak at the very top. Justine retired, Maria is out long term with an injury, Ana is very suspect psychologically, MoMo is long past her prime and Sveta is a mental basket case. That leaves only V&S as proven GS winners in decent form...
