American tennis star Lindsay Davenport has scuttled rumours of retirement by entering the 2009 Australian Open.

The 2000 Open women's champion had reportedly been contemplating retirement but Australian Open organisers announced on Thursday the 32-year-old would play in next year's tournament.

"We are really excited that she has entered," Open tournament director Craig Tiley said.

"She is a world class player and a great ambassador for our sport."

Davenport lost to eventual champion Maria Sharapova in the second round of the 2008 Open, but hasn't played since this year's US Open in August.

As well as her Australian Open singles title, Davenport also won Wimbledon in 1999 and the US Open in 1998.

Entries for next year's Open have closed and the top 100 men and women are all on the list for the main draw.

At the moment, no as she is 35. Also, she will lose pts for winning Auckland in 2008 so she will fall farther down the rankings.

I hate seeing her as a floater. Hopefully she doesn't float into Venus

It's the WTA. With injuries, withdrawals, and fashion shoots other commitments, she'll probably be the 10 seed

This is great news. If nothing else, that horrendous match in NY v. Bartoli won't be her last.

This comment is tempting fate. Paging her first round opponent, a lethal Zuzana Ondraskova!

Seriously, this is awesome news. She can't do much worse than last year's AO.

Last year's AO wasn't really that bad of a result for her because she couldn't have done any better, other than make it a closer match against Sharapova. With the way Sharapova was playing, Lindsay had no chance. This year, she should be the best unseeded player if she's in her best shape, but she's still an unseeded player...so you never know what will happen.

I think she did as well against Sharapova as anyone else could. In fact, she won just as many games off of her as Henin. I was referring more to the Errani fiasco.

This is a wonderful, benign post. But with that avatar, my stomach turns and my desk is coated in vomit.

Make it stop.

Sadly it has a shelf life of about 4 more days. Try not to eat anything runny.

I would say autobiography, but Sue Mott wrote it.
