Serena Out \ Marat Safin In

US Open winner and world number 2 Serena Williams has been forced to withdraw from the Hyundai Hopman Cup. She injured her hamstring in the year ending WTA Championships and has not been able to recover in time to prepare adequately for the Perth tournament. She still intends to play the Australian Open.

However, in a boost to the tournament, mercurial Russian star Marat Safin has shelved retirement plans and recommitted to the Hopman: “I’m pleased to confirm my participation in Hopman Cup. It will be special to play with my sister, and I hope we can challenge for the Trophy”.

Tournament Director Paul McNamee said, “Although we are disappointed about Serena not being able to make it, we are delighted Marat Safin will be here. What an outstanding combination he and his sister are”.

Two time Champion James Blake will now be partnered by Meghann Shaughnessy who last year played the first Hopman match for USA, where she defeated Sania Mirza of India. Meghann, winner of six singles and 15 doubles titles on the WTA Tour has had an injury plagued year but retains a special WTA singles ranking of 50.

USA will remain the top seeds for this year’s Hyundai Hopman Cup. Blake, a two time Hopman Champion has spent the last few years ensconced in the world’s top 10 with a career high ranking of 4. He finished the year as the world number 10. The Russian brother/sister combination of world number 3 Dinara Safina and dual Grand Slam Champion Marat Safin will fill the number 2 position and be seeded to meet the USA in the Final.

Why do you say that, missin? The U.S. should have a decent shot in the doubles matches. And James is really good at winning matches that hardly count for anything... And Russia and France are in the other half. U.S. actually has a decent chance to make the final, especially if Shaughnessy can pull a surprise or two.

US is in the group with Australia, Germany, and Slovakia so they can still make the final but if they were with France, Russia, and Italy, they would be lucky to win a match.

LOL! I hadn't thought on that aspect of James....but it IS so true! But I don't....have much faith in Shaughnessy pulling a surprise or two....she's been out of action for a long long time. I think Dokic would have a better chance at a surprise than Shaughnessy.

But....right now....mine eyes are waiting to see the Safin-Safina pair. I hope they rock! And I'm ready for a NEW year for Marat.......

THE final - should be U.S. vs Russia, with Russia winning. JMHO.

They can, but I think Slovakia will be the favorites now.

I am SO loving this! What's to complain about???

I LOVE the French team! Alize is a darling and Simon...oh gosh did he prove himself this year or what?

I LOVE the Russian team! Dinara and Marat! I can't WAIT to see them together!

I semi-LOVE the American team! Sorry, I just don't trust James Blake. I'd feel a lot better with Mardy Fish if only because Serena and Mardy work oh so well together!

This makes me so excited for the 2009 season!

If Marat resigns, quits, or withdraws from Hopman Cup, little sister won't be the only one he'd be letting down.....

of course!.... but somehow I don't believe he will quit *forever* this year even if he decides to take a longer hiatus from tennis.
Will he be back in time for the AO?, that's the question for me, not whether he'll step into a court ever again!
(-------->tries very very hard to believe what I'm actually writing)

Oh, I think the American team will do just fine. Remember, Serena and James won the Hopman Cup one year (I forget which one), and I believe they have a darn good chance to do it again!

I'm looking forward to seeing the match-ups. It should prove exciting!

Has the 8th team been announced?

(also, missin, could you put the source into the top post - there's no list on the official site yet)

Definitely a set of fun teams to watch - looking forward to seeing some of these (assuming Tennis Channel is covering).

No Serbian team?

The 8th team is always the winner of a Play-in match, M8. So there are two more teams to be announced.
