Default SERENA OUT OF HOPMAN : INJURY
Serena is out of Hopman Cup because of a thigh injury. It's Meghan Shaughnessy that will replace her and play with James Blake.

IMO, Serena will probably not play Sydney and Jelena will be able to take her spot.

Gotta be an awful bad injury. Hopman's still over 3 weeks away.

Other sources are saying it's hamstring, not thigh. The injury occurred at Doha during the YEC, and while she is pulling out of Hopman, she expects to be fully recovered for the Aussie.

Who would you approach? Bethanie? Jill? Vania? Some junior player?

The only thing that could make Shaughnessy's presence interesting would be if Anna-Lena was playing for Germany.

All of the above, and I don't mean that in a bitchy way.

Maybe this is a thank-you to Meghann for pitching in last year (when Serena couldn't make it for the first match) ?

I was sure Mattek would be the US sub. She has Hopman written all over her.

I wonder if James still wants to show up given his new teammmate...I know I'd be asking for a Doha WC about now.

And a big middle finger to the rest of the country? Eh, she was probably the only one not committed to another tournament. Has she even played a match since that one last year? I would've gone for Melanie Ouden (junior #1) or Coco Vandeveghe (Junior USO winner) before her. And still been disappointed, most likely.

Just call up Jagger's mom and tell her to get her butt to Perth.

Enough about her tatoos. Besides, it's the Hopman Cup. Not the Hopman C Cup.

any chance of putting a wig on Ginepri, and telling him that when everyone calls him Roberta, he should just nod and grunt?

Bless you for thinking Ginepri knows how to do anything BUT nod and grunt as is.

Maybe he should get a toupee anyway...

Meghann Shaughnessy was ranked 52 at the end of 2007 and spent the whole year out with an injury that she got right after (during?) Hopman. She's 29 and she has a slightly creepy husband, she totally deserves this.

Melanie is not #1 unless you mean just in US.

Someone should call Justine. If "slightly creepy" gets you into the tournament, years with HFPY probably earns you at least 1 title without swinging a racket.

Meghan is currently ranked 837th in the world!!!

She's ranked close to 80th among US women.

I think playing a high ranking junior is a better option as they are all ranked higher than Meghan.

I bet her protected rank is pretty solid, though.

I'll always have a soft spot for Meghann since she lost to Zuzana last year during EMW .

Agreed. That's my thinking. I could bring in the creepy hubby but I don't want to play it like that. I just don't want to watch someone play their first match in a year. James Blake loves to joke about getting Hopman partners who never lose. Welcome to the other side, James.
