For sure by December 1st - I need to be practicing by then if I am going to go to Australia and really compete, so I have a few more weeks.''

It's December 1st. I wonder if we'll hear a retirement announcement anything today or this week?

Is this when I put $5 on a retirement announcement?

The problem with that Jeanne...is that you have to find someone willing to bet against a retirement announcement.

That is a big problem. What happens if she doesn't technically announce retirement though?

I bet against an announcement but for Lindsay not playing any more tour events. I call this the Michelle Kwan approach to "retirement".

I think playing the AO, IW, Miami, and Wimby (with some tier IIIs sprinkled in) would be a great end of her career for her. Preferably dropping Miami but since its mandatory (would it be for her at her rank?) and would have to play...

But yeah, I hope she plays again, that Bartoli loss can't be her final slam
I think she should have stopped a long time ago. I have nothing against her, but her last Wimbledon final... that particular year is when she should have let go and never looked back.

She hits the ball cleanly... cleaner than most players, but her fitness has not been good for years now. Once you get back injuries, it is hard to keep that type of quality of play up. I wish her luck in whatever decision she makes, but I think she should go home and take care of her child and start planning her second career.

2005 would've been a nice career ender as Lindsay would've been the only player to retire the world number 1. i hope she call quits as I agree with on fitness issues this year is a good enough reason in itself to quit. I'm glad she came back after having Jagger and she deserved a shot at one last olympics. But now is the time to say goodbye before she starts to fade not that she done that yet but it could happen.

Take it from a huge ASV fan. The last thing you want to see a multiple Slam winning, former #1 do is make a mockery of their legacy by hanging around one year too many. 2002 (and 2001, to be honest) was painful.

Default Lindsay:"I'm still undecided about 2009"
Davenport, who teamed with the now-retired Morariu to win the Wimbledon women's doubles championship in 1999, has a 1 1/2-year-old son, Jagger, with husband Rick Leach. That has led to speculation that she is near the end of her competitive career, or there already.

''Jagger has definitely made my life more busy,'' she said. ''He is 17 months now and he has a lot of energy. I mean, obviously, it is a lot of work, but he is very high-spirited, a lot of fun, very emotional kid. My husband and I are just having a blast. We definitely want more. I mean, I am 32, so I still have a lot of child-bearing years left. We will reach that point again, but right now we are just enjoying Jagger.''

When her schedule comes up, the three-time major singles champion, who owns 55 career singles titles overall and 37 in doubles, says she is undecided for 2009, but acknowledged that she must make a decision soon - the season begins Jan. 5, and the Australian Open gets under way on Jan. 19. She is currently ranked 36th in the world.

''Nothing is in stone yet,'' Davenport said. ''I really just tried to enjoy this fall, be a mom, be at home. This is actually my first time on the court in 10 weeks. When I get home from here I will have to sit down more seriously and look at what I want to do in the future. Right now, I am just going with it. For sure by December 1st - I need to be practicing by then if I am going to go to Australia and really compete, so I have a few more weeks.''

With all the love on the court under a baking Wailea sun, the reasons for the world of tennis working toward a combined tour for men and women were easy to see.

''Well, they are working towards that, I think,'' Davenport said. ''I want to say next year we have something like 10 or 12 combined events. I think as a fan that is really a win-win situation.

''A tennis fan enjoys the difference in the games between the women and the men. If you buy a ticket, I think you would like to see the top women and the top male stars.''

It's a testament to her incredible skill that she can not practice much or take a lot of time off and still hit the ball so cleanly, and be in the top 40 without a lot of tournaments.

I hope she plays a few more in 2009. At least so she can have a goodbye tournament. Maybe she should play the first three months and have IW be her last one.

God, just when I think I'm ready and okay to say goodbye to her I read this and I'm really not ready to let her go. I realized that at the US Open this year and the Bartoli trainwreck. I couldn't give up on her as much as I tried.
I'd love to see her play through another season, I feel like she was robbed a proper one with her knee flaring up for the first time in 4 years (go figure). I also think if she does play next year Indian Wells will be her goodbye though I'd love to see her at Wimbledon one more time.

PS. Lindsay is married to Jon Leach, not Rick. If I had a dollar for everytime a journalist messed that up...

And, Nelslus would of course not even THINK about making inappropriate whoopee-cushion-esque noises during crucial match moments if Lindsay's last tournament were to be Indian "2009 TAT Tailgate" Wells.

Someone was saying earlier that Bartoli ended another former #1's career at the US Open. Was it Sanchez Vicario?

If Davenport does retire, then Jankovic had better start watching out for Bartoli in all of her slam draws. (Bartoli's won the last two times they met!)

The Maid beat ASV in '02 at the US, but Arantxa played a few tournaments (not Slams) afterwards.
