From the ITF.....

An announcement regarding the venue for the 2008 Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Final between Argentina and Spain will be made by the ITF on Friday 10 October. An ITF representative has conducted extensive site visits this week at the two venues proposed by the Argentine Tennis Association (AAT), the Orfeo Superdomo in Cordoba and Estadio Polideportivo in Mar del Plata. These venues will be evaluated by the ITF's Davis Cup Committee on Friday, and a decision made on the venue for the Final.

The 2008 World Group Final will be held on 21-23 November. Further information, including ticket details, will be released at a later stage.

Default Davis Cup WG 2008 Final 11/21-11/23/08
Ah, nothing like a Battle Royale. All we know right now is that the Final will be held in Argentina.

Davis Cup - Regions battle for Davis Cup final
Eurosport - Fri, 26 Sep 16:48:00 2008

Argentine politicians have jumped on the Davis Cup bandwagon with leaders from four regions battling to stage the final against Spain in November.

Argentina usually play on the clay court of the Parque Roca in Buenos Aires but, after completing their semi-final win over Russia on Sunday, team captain Alberto Mancini said he preferred to face the Spaniards on a fast indoor surface.

The announcement immediately had politicians falling over themselves to offer their cities for the November 21-23 tie.

The Buenos Aires city government touted the Lunar Park boxing arena as a possible venue, even offering to close key streets in the city centre and make improvements to the stadium which is located in the financial heart of the capital.

"It's viable to close the streets to set up the stands and spaces required by the ITF (International Tennis Federation),"the city government's sports secretary Francisco Irrarazaval told the Clarin newspaper.

Cordoba, around 700 kilometres to the Northwest, and the summer resort of Mar del Plata are the other candidates and there has also been a bid from the western province of San Juan, although this appears to have fallen by the wayside.

The mayors of Mar del Plata and nearby Tandil, Gustavo Pulti and Miguel Lunghi, have joined forces in attempt to bring the tie to their corner of the country.

Tandil is the home of Juan Martin del Potro, who won both his rubbers in the semi-final to help Argentina defeat the Russians.

The pair suggested that Mar del Plata's the Islas Malvinas Stadium, built for the 1995 Pan-American Games, would be the perfect scenario.

"It's a modern arena... and has a good area of open space around it, which can offer all the complimentary services for the event," said Pulti, in an apparent swipe at Lunar Park, which is hemmed in by congested streets.

Corboda played their trump card when Argentina's number one player David Nalbandian, who was born in nearby Unquillo, backed their campaign.

"Cordoba has big potential, it's an excellent sporting scenario and I would like to play the tie there," he told a news conference.

The Argentina Tennis Association have not ruled out Parque Roca, which is by far the largest of the arenas with a capacity of around 14,000.

But Nalbandian said that it would be handing the tie to Spain on a plate.
"If we want to play on clay and lose the final, then go ahead," he said.

The Orfeo in Cordoba

Luna Park in BsAs

There is talk about importing a roof for Parque Roca where the DC ties are usually played.

Doesn't the ITF require minimum seating to be 12,000 and that is why the Orfeo is problematic and why importing a roof for Parque Roca is seriously being considered?

As I understand it Parque Roca is the only place in Argentina with more than 12,000 seats. Of course they could put hard courts there, but the team prefers very fast indoor carpet (like St Petersburg or 2005 MC)...

Yes. That is the surface Nalbandian did so well on last year. How JMDP will do is not clear at this point. He played well on outdoor hard during the summer but I don't think he has that great a record indoors. I see his home town/area has thrown it's hat into the ring as well.

The roof for Roca is very expensive and it would be a one-time thing. So I don't think it will be done.

The Orfeo and Luna Park can both add extra seats and almost reach the 12,000. I think Orfeo would be at 11,000.
However ITF said it would be very strict in enforcing the rules. I know that a decision has to be made ASAP since they have to elevate their proposal by today or Monday.

This just in:
Parque Roca is out. Apparently one of the requirements is that the stadium be roofed. (Is this correct? Does the ITF demand a roofed place for the Final?).
This from the company that holds the DC rights in Arg.

http://www.infobae.com/contenidos/40...al-Parque-Roca

Apparently Mar del Plata and Cordoba are the two remaining places and it would be decided on Monday, with Cordoba holding a slight edge.

Nalbandian wants Davis Cup final in hometown

BUENOS AIRES, Sept 27: Argentina’s leading player David Nalbandian wants the Davis Cup final against Spain in his central hometown of Cordoba.

Meanwhile, the Argentine Tennis Association received an extended deadline to Wednesday to choose a venue for its first home final from Nov 21 to 23.

The final venue has become a minor controversy as the AAT try to balance the wishes of its captain and players who want a fast indoor court to counter Spain and win their first Davis Cup, sponsors who want maximum exposure, and the International Tennis Federation (ITF), which wants a stadium with a minimum 12,000 seats.

Nalbandian, world ranked No 7, insisted the “players have the final word.” http://www.dawn.com/2008/09/28/spt23.htm

Is the controversy still minor when the President of Argentina has weighed in with her opinion? Maybe Drop-Shot can fill us in.

Well, it's minor. Politicians trying to get attention using an event like this is common. That's why Mrs. Kirchner spoke up. Today Cordoba's governor also backed his bid, later today Buenos Aires' governor repostulated Mar del Plata.

Yet this is the last word: Cordoba was elevated to the ITF as the first option and Mar del Plata as the second option.

The ITF announcement.

Davis Cup Committee selects Mar Del Plata for 2008 Final

The Davis Cup Committee, in a conference call meeting held earlier today, decided unanimously that Mar del Plata would host the 2008 Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Final between Argentina and Spain scheduled for 21-23 November.

This decision was reached after careful consideration of the plans proposed by the Argentine Tennis Association and the site visit reports made by ITF Representatives, immediately after the semifinal and last week in separate visits to Mar del Plata and Cordoba.

The Davis Cup Committee is comprised of chairman, Juan Margets (ESP), Pierre Darmon (FRA), Neale Fraser (AUS), Enrique Morea (ARG) and Alan Schwartz (USA). Although both Margets and Morea contributed to the discussions during the meeting, they recused themselves in the voting as the nations they represent will meet in the 2008 Final.

“This was one of the most challenging decisions we have made during my more than a decade-long tenure on the Davis Cup Committee,” said Margets, who is also Executive Vice President of the International Tennis Federation that owns and manages the Davis Cup Competition. “There were many factors to consider including the wishes of the players to play on an indoor hard court, the feasibility of increasing the venue to the 12,000 seat minimum required in the regulations and other factors that contribute to the success of a Davis Cup Final. In the end, the Committee unanimously felt that Mar del Plata was the most appropriate venue for the 2008 Final.”

Argentine fans over on MTF are saying that the DC sponsors wanted Mar del Plata. We're talking BNP Paribas, Kia and Hugo Boss.
I thought Mar del Plata needed the most work but the decision has been made.

Daveed will not be happy at all!

I'm shocked! I know that the Cordoba venue was in the process of adding seats to push the capacity up to the requirements, so I figured it was a done deal. The Mar Del Plata location did not need any additional seats added so I guess that's why they chose that venue, it did not hurt that all of the DC sponsors backed it in addition to Del Potro's people and Vilas' people. Mar Del Plata is Vilas' home town and a huge beach resort area.

So now we know.

Some were saying that MdP is easier to get to, specially for incoming spaniards. Which is true I guess, but still... something smells fishy... (and not because MdP is a port city)
sorry, bad joke
