I think she was a fine tennis player, but everyone is in the pros. If you can't produce it, then it doesn't count. That's why it infuriates me when players (Serena comes to mind) repeatedly explain losses by saying "I shouldn't have lost that match (implying they're a better player than the person across the net) but I just wasnt' able to hit my shots today." Hitting your shots is the name of the game.
Right, I just don't get how she's considered overrated. She is too famous, but it isn't her tennis she's famous for. The things she did accomplish in her career are often overlooked.

I think there are a lot of players from before the Open Era who have been underrated. And if you take their accomplishments, a lot of players in the modern era would seem overrated.

In any case: Monica Seles. Not so much in terms of her place in history as in terms of her potential
Monica had 8 grand slams before she even turned 20 years old!

You just hate the grunt.

"Overrated" is often a label we put on folks we don't like.

Based on the attention she got when she was a player (beyond extreme) versus what she accomplished (a Wimby semi early on and a couple doubles Slams with Hingis about sums it up, right?). Her current reputation isn't inflated, but has an extreme amount of attention ever been paid to player who never won a tournament?

Just for the record, I always liked Kournikova and defended her based on her doubles results, and the odd circumstances foisted upon someone that young.

I was thinking more about the latter part of her career, when people start counting the slams she would have won had she not been stabbed, etc. Didn't mean to trump what she accomplished early on.

How can you not though?

I agree that Anna K. shouldn't be on this list. Not sure who thinks she'll be in the Int'l Tennis Hall of Fame.

You just don't. It's horrible that that happened to her, but it doesn't give her phantom major wins.

Of course it doesn't, but that's like saying JFK wasn't great because he didn't finish his term.
