We still have one match to go this season, but it shouldn't have any influence to this... Who are your picks (mine in bold)?

What are the requirements for Newcomer? I know we went over that last year (for ATP). Outside of top 100 before the season?

ATP

Player of the Year – Rafael Nadal

Most Improved Player – Tsonga

Comeback Player of the Year – Numerically, it might be Safin. Schuettler works for me

Newcomer of the Year – Kei Nishikori (#289 to #64, 1 title). Granollers if Spain wins DC with him playing

WTA

Player of the Year – Dominica Cibulkova... wait, that's a different kind of player

Most Improved Player – Dinara Safina

Comeback Player of the Year: Groenefeld

Newcomer of the Year – Sorana Cirstea . She won some doubles titles as well.

I think so. In very rare cases it has been "barely inside"...

Previous winners (last 15 years):

ATP:

93' Patrick Rafter 243 to 66
94' Albert Costa 221 to 52
95' Mark Philippoussis 274 to 38
96' Dominik Hrbaty 315 to 78
97' Julian Alonso 227 to 36
98' Marat Safin 203 to 49
99' Juan Carlos Ferrero 346 to 45
00' Olivier Rochus 324 to 68
01' Andy Roddick 156 to 14
02' Paul-Henri Mathieu 150 to 36
03' Rafael Nadal 200 to 49
04' Florian Mayer 250 to 35
05' Gael Monfils 239 to 30
06' Benjamin Becker 420 to 58
07' Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 212 to 43

WTA

95" Martina Hingis 87 to 16
96' Anna Kournikova 281 to 57
97' Venus Williams 204 to 22
98' Serena Williams 99 to 20
99' Kim Clijsters 409 to 47
00' Daja Bedanova 292 to 54
01' Daniela Hantuchova 108 to 38
02' Svetlana Kuznetsova 259 to 43
03' Maria Sharapova 186 to 32
04' Tatiana Golovin 345 to 27
05' Sania Mirza 206 to 31
06' Agnieszka Radwanska 381 to 57
07' Agnes Szavay 207 to 20

ATP

Player of the Year – Rafael Nadal

Most Improved Player – Andy Murray
Simon: If he would have won a Masters Series or TMC, he would have gotten more consideration
Tsonga: If he has not missed from Casablanca to United States Open, he would have been my winner 'cuz I have a feeling that he would have won at least one more title
Del Potro: All 4 titles came when the top players(except Roddick in LA and Washington) was not entered

Comeback Player of the Year – Rainer Schuettler

Newcomer of the Year – Kei Nishikori

WTA

Player of the Year – Serena Williams and Jelena Jankovic
Venus Williams: Below average first half kept her from being POY
Ana Ivanovic: Below average second half kept her from being POY

Most Improved Player – Dinara Safina
Safina was the best player in the WTA from the beginning of Berlin until the conclusion of United States Open but her only flaw was obtaining a Slam win or Olympic Gold.

Comeback Player of the Year: Jie Zheng - Wimby SF clinched it for me

Newcomer of the Year – Sorana Cirstea - Winning Tashkent helped

A lot of these players became great singles champs, but what strikes me is that even more of them had great doubles success. Kournikova, Hantuchova and Golovin have won doubles slams but not singles, and Clijsters won more doubles slams then singles. Venus and Serena have won every important doubles title there is.

I have no idea who Bedanova is.

Don't feel bad. I didn't figure out that tennis was the sport for me until the end of high school.

I just looked at Bedanova's activity for 2000. She took out a lot of players we know well as she was rising up the rankings. Some of her notable wins were over Henin, Mauresmo, Petrova (who she beat twice before Nadia destroyed her at the US Open), and Mirka Vavrinec (who was the top seed at a challenger once upon a time)!

It was a shoulder injury (sounds familiar?)...

BTW Daja is now engaged to Jan Hajek (also a former top 100 player) and they together operate a tennis academy in Olomouc (Moravia, Eastern Czech Republic).
