Maria's worn an Orthodox cross (it's not a different cross, just a traditionally Rusisan design) since at least 2004. Unless she joined a Christian cult, what's the news?

I think we're at a point in American culture where, because one group is so loud, when someone says "converted to Christianity," we immediately assume they mean evangelical.

Yeah. IMO the only "controversy" is saying she "became a Christian", as if being Orthodox wouldn't have made her one before.

Default Sharapova's conversion?
RUMOR ALERT:

I'll over-emphasize that I have no data to back this up or reason to believe it's true, but if it turns out to be true, you can say you heard it here first...

The word here in Scottsdale is that Maria Sharapova, while rehabbing in the area, has become a Christian. I'll be keeping an interested ear on her next on-court post-match interviews when she returns from the injury for any "thank the Lord"s. We shall see...

Again, PURELY RUMOR! Now go tell everyone.

I remember her wearing a necklace with a cross before, though. I've always thought she was Christian.

That's why I hate the phrase "becoming a Christian". Whenever you hear that, you know no one's talking about converting to Catholicism.

She did wear a cross. I would assume a non-practicing Orthodox.

Sharapova/Pierce doubles team would be cool.

Maybe she can say a few prayers for Ana. Nothing else seems to be working.

Pierce was a little more interesting than the standard issue cross/crucifix. She actually wore rosary beads around her neck, which I think is a uniquely Catholic (and perhaps Roman Catholic at that) tradition. They are used as a meditative/devotional tool.

If I remember correctly, the one that Mary wore was given to her by Roberto Alomar.

There's a difference?

Rosary beads! good times, good times. I remember when people used them more as a fashion accessory than to pray or use them as an actual meditative/devotional tool.

I have some somewhere.

There are a few branches of Catholicism (other branches don't see the Pope as their leader), though Roman Catholicism is the largest, by far. Roman Catholicism is the largest single religious body in the world.
