Three of the world’s top women - Jelena Jankovic, Maria Sharapova and Venus Williams - have agreed to play a new World Team Challenge in Hong Kong next year as a warm-up event for the Australian Open. The tournament will feature four teams representing Europe, Russia, the Americas and Asia-Pacific. Each team will consist of three players competing in singles and doubles. Jankovic will lead Team Europe, Williams the Americas, Sharapova Team Russia and Sania Mirza of India the Asia-Pacific squad.

Looks like this is taking the place of the Watson Water Challenge, which always drew a good number of the top ladie$ (Ma$ha got a 7 figure fee in 2007 for playing here).
I don't recall ever seeing a format like this before, and while it is an Exhibition, you ask me, this is the kind of event the WTA should be looking to put together. I'd love to attend, and would definitely watch something like this, especially if you could persuade the top players to play one or two of these a year. Almost like Ryder Cup in golf, and seems to have a lot of potential. |
