No Elena, Safina, Chaks, Kirilenko or Nadia? That's a whole lot of people missing. Have been wondering all year why Kirilenko hasn't played FedCup in forever. I think it could help her. |

Ekaterina Makarova
Talk about a baptism of fire – making your representative debut in the final of the biggest team competition open to you! That’s the reality facing the 20-year-old Muscovite Ekaterina Makarova, who finds herself drafted into the Russian team for her Fed Cup debut despite being ranked 56th in singles and just 10th among the Russians. She’s also the 10th-ranked Russian on her doubles ranking of 68, but the fact that she has won nine titles on the ITF Futures circuit is probably what swayed Shamil Tarpischev to call her into his squad for the trip to Madrid ahead of higher-ranked players. She has played regularly with Alisa Kleybanova, who might have earned the call-up, but the left-handed Makarova has got the nod. She is no relation to Elena Makarova, who played in 25 ties for Russia between 1992 and 1999. --- from the Fed Cup website, News Articles |

I saw almost 2 sets of Makarova's match against Li at the USO. She's okay. She could conceivably challenge anyone on the Spanish squad in singles, if she had to. Not saying she'd win, but she COULD... If she had to.
She has a loyal group of fans... Or family members. They rooted for her ferociously. |

OK, I'm convinced Zvonareva is either hypothermic or under a spell of some experimental coaching. She wore a fleece hoodie in her warm-up in New York in about 90-degree heat, she's wearing a full warm-up today with pants while Anabel's just wearing her dress and all the audience is sitting with paper fans.
