Default Pre Match Player Interviews
Does anyone else hate these as much as I do? Is there a reason why they feel compelled to stop the players as they're walking out on court and interrupting whatever pre-match ritual or focus that they have to ask them stupid questions?

Why is it so surprising that Serena didn't know the result of Ivanovic's match? She was preparing for her own match, not milling around the US Open Grounds watching the other players.

I would love to do away with these tunnel interviews.

I agree. The players (most of them) don't appear to be fond of them, so it makes me uncomfortable to watch them.

Having been on the grounds, it's awfully hard not to get wind of a big upset like Coin d. Ivanovic. There's a buzz in the air, people talking about it, replays of the end of the match on the huge video monitors, and I'd have to think there was a lot of noise in the locker room about it.

I find it hard to believe Serena knew nothing of the result, unless she literally had her head in a book or towel, with headphones on. Which is entirely possible. But if she was paying any attention to her surroundings, the result would be somewhat obvious, she wouldn't necessarily have to be told.

I'm with you. I've never seen the need for them.

There must being nothing worse than psyching yourself up to play your best and then have to think of answers to the inane questions that they ask, especially the lower ranked players who may have never had to deal with it before.
And even for the veterans the answers they give are the same old responses we've heard a million times already.

Do away with it, I say.

They are beyond awkward. Serena in particular seems to hate them.

Sometimes I think, for whatever reason, Serena likes to pretend she's not paying attention to results, even her own. In Paris, I watched a vid where she was interviewed by Rennae Stubbs. She said she didn't know how many times she'd lost so far this year (at the time it was 2).

I don't think Serena's interviews can ever be taken seriously. Sometimes she says things that just makes you scratch your head. And I think she does on purpose.... meaning purposely mislead everyone.

I agree, they're nearly a waste of time and uncomfortable to watch, except... my defense is that it makes a huge difference to hear a player speak, in terms of relating to and engaging with a player that's not a celebrity. To establish that kind of connection before watching a match makes sense for the TV audience. I remember watching Cincy on TV a long time ago and hearing a one-on-one with Yevgeny Kafelnikov for the first time, and I was amazed at home more dimensional you see the players when you hear them talk. I wondered why they didn't air more interviews like this (this was before the video Internet age). It's a simple thing that makes a big difference in engaging the fan's attention and investment.

I'm gonna go against the grain on this one. I don't think they really have any actual worth, but I find them very endearing, nonetheless. I have absolutely no problem with them. Maybe because I grew up watching so much professional wrestling.

Is that why she was late for her one tonight? Pretty funny, watching him starting to talk before she had come out and then looking like a dummy when they showed the empty hall and him talking to no one.

I always thought that it was just the interviewers that she hated, because it seems like Shriver and Carillo are often the ones doing them.

I don't like them either. It's kind of nice to see if they're relaxed or amped, but I wish they would cut them even shorter because the players obviously get antsy.

Q: "How are you feeling?"

A: "Good. I feel 100%."

Q: "What's your strategy tonight?"

A: "F#* YOU! LET ME LEAVE!"

If you think these interviews are bad, watch a NBA basketball game where they talk to the players/coach before the game, coach after the first qtr, players at the half, coach after the third quarter. Best part of the game is the last 2 minutes which takes at least 30 minutes. Also, baseball talks to the manager during the game.

I'm surprised more players don't refuse; I guess it's a problem in that they have to walk by the interviewer to get to the court. I'd love to hear a "Get out of my face & let me go play my match" response.

The worst question in sports interviews (IMHO) "What do you have to do to win tonight?"

Answer: Win more games (since we all know in tennis, winning more points doesn't necessarily win you the match).

If it were up to the players, they would never do interviews. Why do you suppose there are penalties for skipping the post-match interviews? However awkward, however pointless, let's be thankful for what we have. Less access to the players is never good for a sport.
