Default Jelena's #1!
Even though it's not as epic as Rafa's ride to the top, I thought my girl JJ still deserved a woot woot thread.

Woot woot!

She's a real nutty character, but what a fun player! It's too bad she gets it without a significant win. I hope she holds the spot for a stretch later in her career after she wins a major, ala Mauresmo and Clijsters.

SNAP!

Congrats, Jelena. Now here's to more smiles and wisecracks and less injuries and excuses.

.....And her injury time-outs and delightful giggles and changing her freakin' panties on the court (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dqZP4kmKgH4) and losing to Dokic for her first match after becoming No. 1 and bathroom breaks and having herself taped up and taking her tape off and bizarre outfits and the 45 mph second serves and the melt-downs and the blowing huge leads and......

LOOK, I love Jelena, too. But, her being No. 1 is TOTALLY what tennis does NOT need right now. Not even close to being deserving....yet.

SNAP?!?!? Um, YEH, I'm the one who started the Roger is Washed Up thread.....

I ain't freakin' out about No. 2 for Rog. Start it up, y'all. Whatever- Nadal deserves No. 1, to say the least. I DO want Roger to play tennis again, mind you. And I do indeed flip out WHILE watching him play crap. Still, I'm more than consoled with Rog's 12 Slam titles.

As opposed to.....No. 1 Jelena......

(OH, she is.) (Not that this is a sentiment that is, ahem, universally shared exactly in TAT-land....)

All I'm saying is that Jelena will be ranked #1, and she and her fans should be happy and not embarrassed about it. It may show some sort of flaw in the computer ranking system, but she earned it all the same, a feat unaccomplished by the likes of Conchita Martinez, Mary Pierce, Anastasia Myskina, Jana Novotna, Zuzana Ondraskova, Hana Mandlikova, Gabriela Sabatini, Lori McNeil, Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, etc., etc., etc.,

So here's to Jelena .

It's a sad day for WTA really...

I kind of like JJ, but now she will be the most undeserving #1 ever. I guess we should blame JH for all this...

Oh I don't know about EVER. She's insanely consistent. All the other top players have amazing results followed by lots of upsets or injury breaks. I was SO impressed at her making the semis of the AO this year.

When Mauresmo reached #1 the first time, it was way stinkier.

Name another one. If rankings were still done like in the early 90-ties (rewarding quality over quantity) she wouldn't even be in the top 5.

I still feel that if you've reached the threshold, you deserve it. Period. I understand the contrary argument and part of me agrees with parts of it, but consistent results, including slams that merit the points for number one-- even if it coincides with everyone else around you failing to capitalize-- you've earned it.

Congrats, Jelena!

I don't feel so bad that she is the #1. I don't know anyone else who deserves it more based on current results. Also (like pamchenko said in another thread), I think Jelena understands that she hasn't yet fully "justified" the ranking yet. It's not like Jelena goes around boasting about her ranking, as a certain other Serb does...

But a certain other Serb has earned that right by winning a GS

I don't have specific players (although Mauresmo does leap to mind) but I was more saying that I don't think her becoming number one isn't such a horrible thing.

If the rankings were still done like the early 90s Jankovic would schedule differently, plain and simple.
