The 8th spot can be a Wild Card and is usually awarded as such if a slam winner doesn't make top 8
The 8th spot is not a discretionary pick. The rule is

1) Selection List. The Selection List for the event shall be:
a) The top 7 players in the ATP 2008 Race as of the Monday after the last ATP
Tournament of the calendar year; followed by
b) Up to 2 Grand Slam winners of that year, in order of their positions, positioned
between 8 and 20 in the ATP 2008 Race as of that Monday; followed by
c) Players positioned 8 and below in the ATP 2008 Race as of that Monday.

Say you have two random grand slam winners, who end up ranked 15 and 16, respectively. Then the number 16 guy gets screwed by rule a (top 7) and rule b (random GS winner ranked 15)? That seems kind of odd. I wonder if they would only take the top 6 in such a case.

Thanks, 3mlm.

So, in MysterX's situation above, #16 goes in as an alternate?

New Wimbledon champion Rafael Nadal is among a star trio announced as the first qualifiers for the 2008 Tennis Masters Cup. The Spaniard will join four-time champion Roger Federer of Switzerland, whom he beat in an epic Wimbledon final, and Serbian Novak Djokovic at the prestigious circuit finale, to be held for the fourth year at Shanghai’s Qi Zhong Stadium from November 9-16....

Nestor/Zimonjic and the Bryans are the first two doubles teams to qualify also.

And it's only July 9. Yup, they're just a little further ahead of the pack...

Amazing that three players are that far ahead of the rest of the ATP that their tickets are allready punched.

Davy and Daveed are probably close to a lock looking at race points. But there's a lot of room between 6 and 11 for someone to start making a move. And there's only 100 race points seperating #8 from #25, so a solid hardcourt performance could boost a lot of player's chances of getting in.

Something tells me it'll be another 11th hour free for all. I actually love that.

I think the late season Masters Series events in Paris and Madrid love that most of all ...

I agree they're well ahead of the pack but I believe Nole and Rafa qualify automatically for winning slams, right? I remember a few years back when Gaudio made it to the final 8 for winning Roland Garros even though he wouldn't have made it otherwise.
