And then there were two.
Venus Williams versus Serena Williams for the whole enchillada at Wimbledon 2008. Have a ring of familiarity to it, anyone? Only the two finest grass court players of the 2000s. Between them, the owner of 6 titles at this tournament. Throw in their doubles accomplishments here, and their appearances in finals, and their Hall of Fame credentials just shine that much brighter. Miss Venus. 4 time champion, additional 2 time finalist. Comes into the final without dropping a set. Given her tradition of excellence at this tournament (this is her 12th Wimbledon), her excelence playing on grass, her serve, her ability to reach shots or move in to net it's hard to make an argument as to why she would not be a clear favorite. Unless, the person on the other side of the net is... Miss Serena. 2 time Wimbledon champion, and Queen of Slam hardware among the current WTA. A title tomorrow would be her 9th Slam, and nobody lives for the big match as much as her. Serena also has not dropped a set on her march to the final. The huge serve is back, and so is the belief that there is no one better in the WTA. Career H2H - Serena leads 8-7. Serena also leads 5-4 when they play at Slams, and 6-2 when they play in a tournament final. Serena also leads 2-1 at Wimbledon. Venus leads 6-4 in their 2 set H2H, Serena leads 4-1 in 3 setters. |

Nerves are going to be a factor. I hope only for a couple of games early, then they settle into a solid rhythm, and produce the memorable final we all know the two of them are capable of playing.
Serena's won me over. Between what I have seen of her play, and what I have read/heard of her pressers, Little sister is brimming with all the confidence right now. I think it's to Venus's disadvantage that Serena is the Fierce Stomping Diva. It must be so hard playing your baby sister, especially when she is so talented. Serena in three. |

Before the tournament has started I picked Venus to win the whole thing.. I just think her game is the best on grass when she is confident and healthy... and if she doesn't face her younger sister... now, since Serena made to the final I have reconsider my pick and go with Serena in 3 sets. I just think she has huge mental edge over Venus. Serena will bring same killer attitude and mentality, but I am not sure Venus CAN do the same to her younger sister. I would be watching (probably) and will cheer for Venus to fight through her nerves and prevail, but I don't think it will happen.

I am hereby offering my live and in-person rooting services to the TATer that best convinces me to back Venus or Serena. I don't really have a preference and am willing to sell my services to the highest TAT bidder.
I imagine my seats will be in the back, but the Brits are really quiet, so the lucky sister will definitely hear my calls of support. Let the bribery begin... |

I can't see Venus winning it in three. She either seals the deal in two or it's Serena's dish. |

I agree. I find it interesting that Venus hasn't beaten Serena in 3 sets in 9 years. And Serena's done it 4 times since then. I do get the feeling that Venus is gonna fight her sister harder than she ever has before, though. I'm excited. And hopeful. The Bangalore match was very entertaining and the US Open match from 2005 was one of the worst matches I've ever endured, so i guess it can go either way. I choose to believe this will be a great encounter. |
