For my money, the higlight match of tomorrow's schedule (some might argue Nadal/Murray, but I don't see anything that stops Rafa tomorrow).
What to say about Marat Safin, and Wimbledon 2008, that hasn't been said allready. The tournament has been his professional resurrection. He seems to have left the demons at home, and is playing with a commitment that is incredible to see. This is his 2nd Wimbledon quarter (he lost to Goran in 2001). Has the big serve, and the huge groundies that should be rewarded at Wimbledon. Feliciano - 40 spots ahead of Marat in the rankings (just sounds odd, doesn't it?). Only managed to get a seed in this tournament due to a couple of timely withdraws. And has made the most of slipping in with the 31 seed. F-Lo has that huge lefty serve that always serves him well at this tournament, and as long as he can avoid having to hit a backhand, he can rally with nearly anyone. This is also Feli's 2nd trip to the Quarters at Wimbledon (2005, lost to Hewitt). Career H2H - 4-1 Lopez (!) One prior meeting on grass, at WImbledon in 2005, which Feliciano won in straights. |

Marat has experience on his side and F-Lo may get tight since he never been to semis of GS. I checked odds for this one and Marat is about 2-1 favorite to win this match... IMO it is closer than that, maybe 50-50. Lopez has always gave Marat trouble because of lefty serve and low slice backhand. This is second week though and courts are firm but this time around and especially since it has not been raining much... this year, we possibly have THE slowest Wimbledon on record yet and that will play into Marat's hands more.
I give slightest edge to Marat. |

I voted for Marat in 4.
But I'll tell you what... If Marat wins this match, I firmly believe he CAN beat Federer in the semis. I really do. It's not likely, but it's within the realm of possibility. Which is why I bit the bullet in the suicide pool and picked the Schuettler/Clement match. Call me insane. And you'd probably be right. |

I was surprised to see how many picked "Marat in 4" as I did as well.
Moose said it: This is Marat's tournament resurrection. I think taking out Novak and then making it all the way here is a good sign. And I somewhat like Feli too. But I see Marat playing a little bit smarter for the lefty Spaniard. |

I voted for Marat in 4. I just think if he does win, the momentum will be there and he CAN beat Federer. I think Roger will have additional pressure on him because of the possible history making moment, and Marat just may sneak through. |
