Maybe the State Department is making nice with North Korea to thwart North Korean belligerence when Israel attacks another part of the "Axis of Evil", Iran- not that I'm of a paranoid or suspicious nature.

I donīt think so.
It is improbable that Israel attacks Iran.
And North Korea could make war on the Korean peninsula only.

I'll stand by my personality disorder.
Sure it is not the endless love for Northkorea, what makes the US inviting the vice FM.
But maybe itīs just for the relaxation of the Korean situation.

North Korea isnt really known for relaxing.

They start playing nice when foreign aid winds down and their domestic supply goes south but inevitably do something crazy and get everybody up in arms again.

Jong-Il is far from a master statesman.

The diffirence is this time, that the wish for talks came from America and not from North Korea.

Can't imagine anything good coming from these conversations anytime soon. "First vice-minister of Foreign Affairs", wow... wonder what this guy had to go through to get to that position and be allowed out of the country to speak on its behalf.

It can certainly not be worse.
the worst result would be that we keep the current Status Quo.

That would make much more sense if you were dealing with a rational leader, which in this case North Korea cannot be described using the word rational. What is it you guys expect to accomplish with these talks? You think they will all of a sudden stop the rhetoric of threats against South Korea, abandon all the efforts for WMD, and threatening everyone else protecting South Korea? You really suspect we can talk our way out of the mess going on in the Korean Peninsula? At this point conflict is a matter of when, not if and there is little evidence to suggest otherwise. (And trust me on this, I am not advocating war with them... just saying I have zero confidence in who we are dealing with.)

Bill Clinton said about Kim Jong Il that he is very intelligent and one of the best (and evil) leaderws ever.

That depends on South Koreaīs behavior.
- South Korean Soldiers use North Korean symbols for target practise
- They paint anti-NK watchwords in sight of Northern soldiers
- In maneuver, they cross the border and shoot in NK waters
- Northkorean websites get hacked by Southkorea
- etc

You really suspect we can talk our way out of the mess going on in the Korean Peninsula?
Yes, if you know about the NK guidelines.

At this point conflict is a matter of when, not if and there is little evidence to suggest otherwise.
No, NK is not like Libya or what ever. It has a strong army and probably nuclear weapons.

Trust me, I hope that you are right as I have no interest in the mess a conflict with NK can produce. Just saying I have no confidence in anything coming out of NK as being serious about discussions.

It also depends on what the US claims for better relations.

- It is difficult for NK to understand, why it should not have nukes, when the US have thousands of.
Maybe, it is better to create an environment, in which nobody thinks about using nuclear weapons.

- NK doesnīt need lessons in how to govern. Every attempt to instruct them will complicate all talks. NK isīt trying to change the USA anyway.

- NK doesnīt forbid business with non-communist companies. Itīs the US, who forbids its companies to deal with NK. NK has business zones, in wich even Southkorean companies produce. Such products often are labelled with "Made in Korea".

- What Nk needs is food.

Easy rules how to bring talks to a positive result and make the live conditions of millions of people in North- and Southkorea much better.
