The glorious United States of America! The poster child for freedom. Since its birth the US has been looked at as the penticle of freedom. We have always stuck to the one word slogan of "Freedom." However the freedoms we do have are very simple. Things like freedom of speech and religion are obvious no brainers. They are fundamental rights that all people are granted.
I believe that the current american political system is threatening our freedoms. In todays system a president or congressman goes into office with a personal agenda. Number one on the list is getting re-elected. Getting re-elected involves puting your opinon into action, because afterall it was your opinion that got you elected. A candidate wins votes by being popular. They state there opinion on the issues and then hope that enough people agree with them to get them elected. A prime example of this is George Bush using his opinion on religion to harness the power of Evengelical Christians to produce enough votes to get elected. Now I am a firm believer in opinions not having the ability to be wrong, yet they can never be right either. They can be ignorant, but never right or wrong. An opinion is how someone feels and that should always be respected. So it seems to me that these popularity contests do nothing but turn these opinion into law. The bad thing about opinions as law is that it creates seperation. It supresses the minoritys opinon. Someone who is in office never wants to be remembered as a weak politician. This forces these politicians to do whatever is necisarry to make there opinion the law. This involves manipulating the system in your favor to get things done. Pork Barrel Politics achieves this. Politicians use the "you scratch my back I'll scratch yours" mentality to make there opinions concrete actions. So what are we sitting on? In a nut shell no one has the right to stop anyone from doing anything, unless what there doing impedes on someone else freedom of choice. For instance lets look at the abortion issue. By applying what ive just layed out this is how abortion should work. It is absolutly alright for a man to walk away from a pregnant women and it is absolutly alright for a women to have an abortion. Thats where it ends for now. I would really appreciate some input on this. I would love for people to share there opinions on these situations. Feel free to critisize all you want. All thoughts are welcome. Afterall there only opinions ![]() |
