This is horrible, and starting to get old and ridiculous!
Car hits NYC pedestrians for 4th time in 2 days Jun 21, 9:30 PM EDT NEW YORK (AP) -- A car plowed into pedestrians on a sidewalk for the fourth time in two days, hurting four people and raising the toll to nearly two dozen victims from the strange spate of wrecks. Saturday's accident in Brooklyn's Flatbush neighborhood - which injured two toddlers - came a day after cars veered onto sidewalks at three separate locations in Manhattan, hitting 18 people. Three were hospitalized in serious condition; 11 others were treated for less serious injuries. Witnesses to Saturday's accident said the car crashed into two children at play on the sidewalk, where they lay bleeding after being hit. A 2-year-old boy was hospitalized in critical condition, and a girl, also 2, in stable condition, police said. Two young women, 16 and 19, were in stable condition, according to police. Authorities did not say whether the women and children were related. Police say the 16-year-old driver ran from the scene on East 19th Street, but officers caught up with him. The teen, Akeem Grant, was arrested on charges that include reckless endangerment, reckless driving and leaving the scene of an accident. No telephone number could be found for him, and police weren't certain whether he had a lawyer. The driver in one of Friday's accidents was arrested after hitting 10 people in front of a Garment District music store. Six victims were hospitalized in stable condition, while the rest declined treatment. Christine Cairns was grazed in the leg when the sport utility vehicle wedged her against an open glass door. She managed to skirt it, "or I would have been down, down under the Jeep," she told WCBS-TV. A small boy was swept under the vehicle but not hurt, said Eliete Alvarez, who hurt his neck when the SUV sent him into a truck, but he helped get the child to safety. "We lifted the car, got the boy out," he said. "The boy was fine." The 23-year old driver was arrested on charges of unlicensed driving and leaving the scene of an accident. The car's owner was ticketed for letting him drive. Earlier Friday, a 60-year-old driver accidentally hit the gas instead of the brakes while pulling out of a Chinatown parking spot, police said. His car hit seven people on the sidewalk and a bench; two were hospitalized in serious, but stable condition. In yet another incident Friday, a livery cab jumped a curb and barreled into a 55-year-old woman in East Harlem. She was hospitalized in critical condition. Copyright 2008 NYPost.com |

I don't know when this happened, but it probably got no press because no one was injured.
This may be hard to visualize, but if you ride the HRP bikeway, you'll know what I'm talking about. As you go north along Chelsea Piers, there's a spot at W 22rd St where the bikeway snakes to the left, then right. At the same spot, the walkway crosses the bikeway, and leads to a traffic controlled crosswalk at Route 9A. Both the bikeway and walkway are crossed by a vehicle driveway off Route 9A that leads to the piers. The bikeway signal flashes red, and is generally ignored. The crosswalk has conspicuously placed signs warning pedestrians to watch for bikes, and is generally ignored. I've never driven through here, but I believe the vehicle driveway is controlled by a stop sign. I've seen cars roll through here. There's a small planted triangle encased in a metal railing separating all this. Last week I noticed the railing was smashed in, obviously hit by a vehicle. A Chelsea Piers employee has been stationed there, directing traffic. Don't-walk signs, still wrapped in plastic covering, have been installed at the driveway, so it will be traffic light controlled. |
