Default Thieves steal controversial Mojave cross
By Robert Jablon - The Associated Press
Posted : Tuesday May 11, 2010 14:03:44 EDT

LOS ANGELES — Thieves have stolen a cross in the Mojave Desert that was built to honor Americans who died in war, less than two weeks after the Supreme Court allowed the religious symbol to remain on federal land.

The 7-foot-high cross was stolen late Sunday or early Monday by thieves who cut the metal bolts that attached the symbol to a rock in the sprawling desert preserve, National Park Service spokeswoman Linda Slater said.

Authorities had no immediate motive for the theft but Slater said possible suspects range from scrap metal scavengers to people “with an interest in the case,” Slater said.

The Justice Department was looking into the case, and a veterans group planned to offer a $25,000 reward to help catch the thieves.

“The American Legion expects whoever is responsible for this vile act to be brought to justice,” said Clarence Hill, the group’s national commander. “While the memorial has been attacked, the fight will continue to ensure that veterans memorials will remain sacrosanct.”

The ACLU condemned the act, but you just know they'd be the first bunch to defend the thieves in court.

Who did it? My guess is it was theives who steal metal to sell at recycling centers. Here, in California, over the past couple of years theft of metal has been a growning problem. The theives not only steel it from constructions sites but steal brass urn from cemetaries as well as copper wire from street lamps on both city streets and highways.

To me jail is not a suitable punishment for a##holes like that. But what i feel WOULD be is considered by many to be extremely harsh.
Go all Medevil on them, by branding them with molten metal poured into a cut on their head (so they can't hide it), and then chop off a hand.

I'm curious. Did you guys all feel this way when the Pagan Circle at the Academy was desecrated?

From: http://www.militarytimes.com/forum/s...-Academy/page2
Side note: The Circle has already been vandalized. http://www.latimes.com/news/nation-a...,3367750.story and http://www.gazette.com/articles/acad...r-worship.html If it was done by academy students or faculty, then I'm severely dissapointed. These aren't the kind of "Officers" that I want leading me.

I never heard of that.

But yes i would be just as outraged.
Though i am closer to Agnostic than Atheist, i still find it abhorrent when any sign of religion (symbol) is desecrated like this.
