Wonder how long it will be before we see adverts begging us to give aid.

You'll probably see the lunatics claiming it is God's wrath for something Chile did or didn't do before you see the adverts. Chile is more modern than Haiti and their building codes over the last 40 years have been fairly tough. They will recover, perhaps with some outside aid, mainly by their own doing.
