The U.S. General Services Administration, which sets the amount the government will shell out for hotel stays by federal workers, is lowering per diem rates in most areas nationwide during the coming fiscal year that begins Oct. 1, according to HotelNewsNow.com. -snip- For example, the rate in New York is dropping to $269 a night from $340, a 20.9% decrease. Hmm.......Government reducing some spending? On the surface, it seems like it..... A quick search of motel prices will show that 269 bucks a night, is WAY above what it should be. A little more looking and you'll see that many hotels, when presented with a federal per diem sheet, will charge the MAX amount allowed. Even though, normally their rooms are 50 bucks a night. A couple years ago, I watched an episode of US marshals.....they had an 'elite' group, based in NY. 12 of them, went after dangerous fugitives. Sounds great? So they decided to go after a rapist. I thought 'good', go get em' guys......6 of the marshals flew to florida, and 6 flew to california (both 'possible' leads on the bad guy). After looking for a few days (and renting 8 vehicles), and staying in some of those $340.00 per night hotels X12.......they got a lead. In florida. So the california ones flew to florida to help get this rapist. A few days more, and they got him! (yay for the good guys).....it was a 18year old punk, who'd 'raped' his 15 year old girlfriend....yes...statuary rape. Cost to the tax payers : counting wages, and benefits, and expenses, HOTELS etc....well over a million bucks. The horrible criminal pleaded guilty, and was given probation. And a sex offender record. But I digress........ Maybe Hotels should have been doing their part, to charge normal prices from the get go, instead of gouging the feds, and then crying, when they don't get to gouge as much. YAY for government cut-backs huh? It's like damming a river with a piece of screen....and saying 'look how much we stopped'. |
