I need to go to Asia for business. It's a long trip, with stops in Hong Kong, Beijing, a few stops in Japan, and some time in Taiwan.
Thankfully, I don't need to go until after Easter. Unfortunately, I'll miss out on the joy of Bright Week. I leave on Bright Monday. I'll be in Hong Kong on Tuesday evening, and could visit a liturgy on Wednesday if one is available. How is Orthodoxy in Hong Kong? Would there be a Wednesday service? Where would it be? I know that there is no sanctioned Christianity in any form in China. Could I attend liturgy in Taiwan? How about Japan? Any other Asian help would be most welcome. Even non-liturgical and practical advice. Thank you very much in advance, Matthew |

I know one of our members is currently in Beijing, so he might be able to give more concrete help. As far as I know, Orthodoxy is not suppressed in Hong Kong. In Beijing though you will probably have to go to church in the Russian embassy.
Here are some websites you might find useful: http://www.cs.ust.hk/faculty/dimitri...etropolis.html http://www.orthodox.cn/index_en.html http://www.orthodoxjapan.jp/ |

Hello Matthew,
As Ryan said, Orthodoxy is not supressed in Hong Kong, though I found it very difficult to find the Cathedral of St. Luke when I was there; everything from the multitude of RC churches to the local Mormon temple(!) were listed in the local Tourist Office, but the Orthodox church was not. However, I managed to find it in the end, and the Cathedral of St. Luke is here: http://www.orthodox.cn/contemporary/.../index_en.html The cathedral is consecrated office space in an inner-city block (on the 7th floor I think), next to a Kindergarten. It seems there are no services on Wednesday, but it is always open to visit. There is a bookstore there too. It's the only time so far I've entered an Orthodox church through sliding glass doors! In China Orthodoxy is suppressed as you say, but there are services in the Russian Embassy in Beijing - where I am - for all foreign passport holders. There are actually services every day through Holy Week and Easter weekend, but I haven't received any details about services for Bright Week yet. I'll send you a PM with some contact details. I have never been to Japan or Taiwan, but as far as I know the Orthodox church is present, with the Church in Japan being autonomous. Welcome to Asia! |
