Metropolitan Philaret of Minsk withdrew and asked those who would have voted for him to vote for Metropolitan Kyrill. The voting was 508 for Metropolitan Kyrill and 160 for Metropolitan Kliment. The new Patriarch is aged 62. God grant him many years!

Metropolitan Kirill elected Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia
Moscow, January 27, Interfax - The delegates to the Church Council meeting under way in Moscow have elected Metropolitan Kirill of Smolensk and Kaliningrad the 16th Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia. Metropolitan Kirill garnered 508 (72%) out of the 702 votes during the election on Tuesday. To be elected Patriarch, a candidate had to be supported by more than half of the delegates. Another 169 votes (24%) went to Metropolitan Kliment of Kaluga and Borovsk. Metropolitan Filaret of Minsk and Slutsk, who was also nominated for Patriarch by the Bishops' Council several days ago, had withdrawn from the elections in favor of Metropolitan Kirill about two hours before the voting. |

My mother-in-law phoned to tell us the news. She said all TV channels were stoppped to make the announcement. The bells of the Christ the Saviour Cathedral tolled sixteen times. Patriarch Kyrill made a very moving acceptance speech in which he said he knew from what the late Patriarch Alexey had said to him that being patriarch was a very heavy cross; he asked the bishops to pray for him that he would carry this cross. He also asked them to help him by their prayers and advice. My parents-in-law were weeping at his speech.

One question I have, on a technical basis, is how could bishop Filaret of Minsk be nominated as patriarch across national lines, considering that his diocese of Minsk and Slutsk lies in Belarus? Granted, I don't know much about the position of the Belorussian church in regards to Moscow, but I am sure someone does.

Moscow, January 27, Interfax - The Softener of Evil Hearts Mother of God Icon at the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow has started streaming myrrh.
Vesti television channel reported citing evidence of numerous churchgoers that the icon was "streaming myrrh very intensively." In line with a long-standing church tradition, the icon has been specially brought to the Church Council meeting currently being held in Moscow, at which over 700 of its participants earlier cast their ballots to elect a new Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia. A tabulation commission member is expected to announce the result of the voting within minutes. Source: http://www.interfax-religion.com/?act=news&div=5634 |

John Litster National boundaries
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- One question I have, on a technical basis, is how could bishop Filaret of Minsk be nominated as patriarch across national lines, considering that his diocese of Minsk and Slutsk lies in Belarus? Granted, I don't know much about the position of the Belorussian church in regards to Moscow, but I am sure someone does. The jurisdiction of the Moscow Patriarchate is not restricted to the boundaries of the Russian Federation, and it includes, amongst other places, Belarus. The late Patriarch, after all, was fom Estonia. |
