Concert of Christian Choral Music A K A F I S T - The Male Chamber Choir Moscow, Russia 508 Byron Street South, Whitby, ON, L1N 4R3 Serbian Orthodox Church “Saint Arsenije of Srem” Admission: FREE ABOUT AKAFIST The prizewinner of international contests AKAFIST is an all-male chamber choir devoted to continuing the magnificent traditions of the Russian choral art and Orthodox Church singing culture. Organized in 1990 by artistic director and conductor Andrei V. Malyutin, the choir is composed of musicians possessing extraordinary vocal skills and considerable liturgical experience in Orthodox Churches and Monasteries in Moscow. During its existence, AKAFIST took part in church services in Novo-Spassky Monastery and gave many concerts in different Russian and Baltic cities. They have presented choral music in international choral and music festivals in Moscow, Omsk, Ples, Riga, Toronto, Montreal, Marktoberdorf, Newport, Chautauqua, Cape May, Huntington and others. AKAFIST was a prizewinner among professional choirs at the 10th Orthodox Choral Festival in Hainovka, Poland and took third place in the International Vocal Ensembles Competition in Korntal-Munhingen, Germany. The repertoire of the male chamber choir consists of the chants of the Russian Orthodox Church of the 16th through the 20th centuries and Russian folk songs. The choir performs pieces of unison Znamenny Chant, monastery chants of the Kiev Pechersk and Troitse-Sergieva Lavras and pieces of church composers of both the 19th and 20th centuries such as Kastalsky, Arhangelsky, Chesnokov, Kalinnikov, Golovanov, Bortniansky, Grechaninov and others. Musical selections of the choir are available on 4 CD's (Rusa Records, USA), cassettes, or on video entitled ¨Joyful Light£.
