IPOH: Four robbery suspects from the notorious "Gang Baju Hitam" were shot dead following a car chase with the police at Taman Meru 2C in Jelapang.

Police, acting on a tip-off over a suspicious group making their rounds in the area, spotted the four and gave chase at about 2am yesterday.

"After about 30 minutes, the suspects lost control of their vehicle and crashed the car in an alley at the residential area," said Perak CPO Deputy Comm Datuk Mohd Shukri Dahlan.

"Two of the men stormed out of the car and started shooting at the policemen who were approaching the vehicle.

"The other two then rushed out and tried to attack the policemen with parangs," he said, adding that no policemen were injured during the shootout.

"Police returned fire and took down all four suspects," he said here yesterday.

DCP Mohd Shukri said police believed the four were trying to break into another home.

They are known for their dark attires when committing robberies.

DCP Mohd Shukri said the suspects did not have identification documents, but police believed that they were aged between 20 and 30.

"Police recovered a revolver with one live bullet and four casings. We also found another pistol with its sheath still on and three parangs," he said.

Other items seized were a crowbar, zinc cutter, three laptops, three digital cameras, five mobile phones, two watches, two jade pendants, fake car registration plate, RM22,439(S$9,000) in Japanese currency, RM25.40 in Indonesian Rupiah and RM285.

"Two break-ins had occurred in the Taman Meru area, involving losses of about RM209,000, on Aug 30 and on Thursday," said DCP Mohd Shukri.

"There have also been about 15 similar break-ins in the last three months here and in several districts such as in Sungai Siput, Taiping and Kuala Kangsar.

Police are investigating whether these cases were linked.

Meanwhile Shimizu Akira, 33, a robbery victim from Taman Meru, thanked police for their swift action.

The business consultant, accompanied by his wife and a friend, was at the police station to identify his belongings.
