A DRIVER in one of the world’s most dangerous motor races has survived a spectacular crash – after his car plunged off the side of a mountain. Lucky Jeremy Foley and his co-driver braced themselves as their Mitsubishi Evo skidded off the narrow track winding up the side of 14,000ft-high Pikes Peak in Colorado. More than 150 cars sped round 156 bends for twelve and half miles during the notorious hill-climb. Spectators watched in horror as Jeremy and co-driver Yuri Kouznetsov failed to make one of the twisty bends and flew over the edge. The car – strengthened with a rally-style steel cage inside – cart-wheeled eight times down the mountain side. Wheels, body panels and engine parts flew off the powerful 560bhp car as it tumbled hundreds of feet. But rescuers were amazed to find the two men still conscious and suffering only minor injuries. They were taken to a local hospital for a check-up but were due to be released yesterday. Jeremy later wrote to friends and fans on Facebook: “Yuri and I are OK, a little beaten up but nothing major. “Thank you so much to everyone for their kindness and support - it is a wonderful feeling to feel so loved." |
