Bangkok Governor MR Sukhumbhand Paribatra on Thursday ordered officials to monitor flood-risk areas after heavy rains triggered floods on several roads in the city in the morning, reports said.
MR Sukhumbhand directed all district offices to prepare for flashfloods due to excessive rainfall, especially in the Ekamai, Thonglor and Sukhumvit areas as well as any area where drainage cleaning work has not been finished. He urged all district offices to ask for help from the Department of Drainage and Sewerage if they had insufficient manpower. City Hall spokesman Wasan Meewong insisted the flooding triggered by heavy rains in many areas in Bangkok on Thursday morning did not result from delay in the dredging, but from the volume of excess water caused by the incessant rains that needed to be discharged from the city’s drainage system before it became unmanageable. The City has cleaned 70 per cent of drains, covering about 6,380 kilometres of pipes along several main roads. The dredging of canals was almost 70 per cent complete, Mr Wasan said. |
