A student intern who made fun of newborn babies while working as a nurse in an unnamed
maternity hospital in Hangzhou has sparked online outrage and her school has recalled her from
the internship.

Xiao Shiyu, a senior student from Zhejiang Chinese Medicine University, posted several photos showing
her teasing sleeping newborns, holding them upright while their heads drooped helplessly, and placing
paper-cuts on a baby’s face to make him look like a pig.



Along with these pictures posted on Weibo.com, the Chinese version of Twitter, she wrote “I almost died
laughing” and “the babies are too small to resist my mischief.” Her tweets triggered anger among net
users. Some doctors warned that a newborn’s neck is very weak. It is dangerous to hold a baby upright
without supporting his head.



“She violated medical ethics and hospital rules and caused bad social influence,” Zhejiang Chinese Medicine
University announced yesterday. “We are investigating the case and will punish her accordingly.”

Before the school’s statement, Xiao has deleted all her messages and photos from her Weibo account and
made a public apology.

“I took those pictures because the babies were so adorable. I feel so sorry for damaging the reputation of
the hospital and nurses. Please forgive my stupidity.”
