Published: Tuesday March 20, 2012 MYT 7:11:00 PM Robber who outran the police is nabbed during next robbery By DURIE RAINER FONG KOTA KINABALU: A robber who managed to escape a high-speed chase with the police was finally arrested when he tried to break into an apartment to rob again. The suspect was earlier part of a four-man group that hijacked a Petronas trailer laden with gas tanks at Kg Bundu Tuhan, which is at the foothills of Mount Kinabalu, about 80km from here. Three of the suspects accomplices, armed with parang, got into the trailer and ordered the driver to drive off to nearby Kota Belud district while the suspect trailed them in a Toyota Vios late Monday. But little did they know their movement was monitored, as there was a global positioning system (GPS) device in the trailer, said state CID chief Senior Asst Comm Omar Mammah. The company that owned the trailer was alerted when it went off its route and the police were immediately notified, he said, adding police managed to locate the trailer soon after. The robbers inside the trailer jumped out and fled into a jungle area but police managed to detain two of them while the suspect in the Toyota Vios sped off, said SAC Omar. Patrol teams from nearby Tuaran district chased the Toyota Vios and was also believed to have fired a shot to get him to stop but the suspect kept on speeding away. SAC Omar said the suspect drove all the way to Penampang near here, adding police teams from Kota Kinabalu and Penampang were hot on his heels by then. He said the suspect was apprehended as he was about to enter the apartment, adding the detainees were aged between 20 and 40. A hunt is on for the last suspect, he said. |
