Tales of cannibalism from the South Pacific
Reports that a German tourist may have been eaten by cannibals in French Polynesia are part of a widely held belief that cannibalism is still practised in the South Pacific.

Stefan Ramin, a German on holiday with his girlfriend in French Polynesia, goes missing while hunting goats with a guide in the forest. A week later, charred human remains are found. A brutal murder? Or cannibalism?

According to sensationalist reports yesterday, prosecutors believe it was the latter. “The probability is that he was murdered by a cannibal and parts of him were eaten,” says one. The local guide is being hunted by police and soldiers. The remains are being flown to Paris for DNA analysis.

It seems an unlikely theory. “It’s true that French Polynesia once had something of a reputation for cannibalism, but that was a long time ago,” says John Gimlette, the travel writer. “In 1910, the American anthropologist, A P Rice, described how the people of the Marquesas Islands ritualistically killed their captives.

"First, they broke their legs, to stop them running away, then they broke their arms, to stop them resisting. This was an unhurried killing, because the Marquesans enjoyed observing their victim contemplating his fate. Eventually, the man would be skewered and roasted.”

Such rituals have passed into Pacific mythology. But, in South America, the practice appears to have endured into at least the second half of the 20th century.

German tourist Stefan Ramin

EATEN?: Fears have been raised that German tourist Stefan Ramin has become a victim of cannibalism on a remote South Pacific island.

Bizarre claims that a missing German sailor has been eaten by Polynesian cannibals have been shot down by French Polynesia’s prosecutor Jose Thorel.

"It's madness…, a non-issue," he's told the latest issue of Les Nouvelles de Tahiti in Papeete of the mystery which has swept the world and left idyllic French Polynesia bewildered – and suspecting an Anglo-German plot.

The story of Stefan Ramin, who went missing on Nuku Hiva in the Marquesas in French Polynesia, has grown in the absence of any real proof over what happened to him.

Evidence of cannibalism is absent but because Moby Dick author Herman Melville said there was cannibalism in Nuku Hiva in a book he wrote in 1846, Fleet Street has leapt to the conclusion it is still practiced by the 3000 people of the island.

Ramin and his girlfriend Heike Dorsch, 37, were on the trip of a lifetime sailing around the world, and had arrived on Nuku Hiva on September 16.

They planned to finish their trip in New Zealand next year.

Dorsch told gendarmes on Nuku Hiva that Remin went goat hunting with local guide Arihano Haiti, 31.

He later returned to say that Remin was injured. She went with him and she claims he then tied her to a tree and ran away.
She escaped, Haiti disappeared into the bush and Remin has not been seen since.

Thorel opened an investigation into sexual assault, kidnapping and murder.

He told Les Nouvelles he had no idea where the cannibal story came from and noted none of the media reporting it had any sources.

''Cannibalism, I do not even want to hear about it. It's madness.

''I see no other basis on which we could talk of cannibalism.

''For me, it's a non-issue. Cannibalism was not raised this issue and I do not understand how this could be discussed by the press.''

Charred remains and clothes were found last week and are being subjected to DNA testing in Paris.

Police may know the results by later this week.

Thorel said there were bits of flesh at the site and teeth found matched those of Stefan Reman.

No one in Tahiti was saying the body showed signs of being eaten, but a German newspaper, followed by Fleet Street, said it was evidence of cannibalism.

Even the stately Daily Telegraph said there had been a history of cannibalism; it was believed to have not been practiced there for years.

Les Nouvelles say people are angry Nuku Hiva was being ''slammed'' internationally.

Nuku Hiva deputy mayor Deborah Kimitete says they would like to find out what happened and wonder if the murder was an act of madness.

They do not believe the cannibalism story.

"People have a hard time accepting that," she told Nouvelles de Tahiti.

"When we saw what was happening in the media, there was anger. We do not like the headlines."

The whole Marquesas community were concerned at the disappearance but were concerned the way the media had branded "an entire population...

"It never happened here, this is the first time we saw such a tragedy."

She said Haiti was well known and physically fit but people had difficulty accepting he could have done what he is accused of.

Les Nouvelles de Tahiti commented that for "the Anglo-Saxon and German media, this is little doubt, Stefan Ramin ... was the victim of an act of cannibalism, although there is no official who will certify this macabre thesis."

Eaten by a cannibal? Mystery of a sailor's Pacific adventure

By Roger Maynard in Sydney

A round-the-world yachtsman who was killed on an idyllic island in the South Pacific is believed by police to have been eaten by a cannibal.

Stefan Ramin and his girlfriend, Heike Dorsch, set sail in 2008. They had been idling through the South Seas for several months when they made landfall at Nuku Hiva, part of the Marquesas group of islands about 1,000 miles north-east of Tahiti.

Mr Ramin, a 40-year-old business adviser from the small town of Haselau in north-west Germany, had a love of travelling, sailing, surfing and diving. Nuku Hiva, the largest of the islands, set in a turquoise blue ocean, offered all that and more.

Quite what happened to Mr Ramin after he made landfall at the French Polynesian island last month is the subject of a police investigation. What is known is that he accepted an invitation to go on a traditional goat hunt in the forest with a guide named Henry Haiti. The guide returned alone from the island's interior and told Ms Dorsch, 37, that her boyfriend had been in an accident and needed help. As she rushed to her boyfriend's aid, Mr Haiti allegedly grabbed her, tied her to a tree and sexually assaulted her. Eventually she freed herself and managed to alert the authorities.

Ashes believed to be those of Mr Ramin were later found in a valley by a team of 22 police officers. Among the blackened remains scattered around the site of the campfire were human bones, teeth and metal fillings. Fearing that Mr Ramin might have been the victim of a cannibalistic attack, soldiers joined police in the search for Mr Haiti. He remains at large.

The German newspaper Bild reported that Mr Haiti was being treated as a "suspected cannibal". Quoting sources on the island it added: "Ashes from the fire are distributed over several square metres. In it are bones, dentures and an artificial denture with charred metal. It smells of burned meat."

A spokesman for the German government said that German police were in contact with local authorities. French Polynesian legal sources suggested the victim was probably murdered by a cannibal for his flesh, but emphasised that investigations, including DNA tests on the ashes, were still being carried out.

Hundreds of years ago, tribal warriors who died in battle were devoured by their enemies in an effort to draw on their strength and power. Nuku Hiva has known much slaughter over the centuries. Cannibalism continued in the South Pacific well into the l9th century.

CSI can solve this case at the toilets.

Sample human feces to test DNA if the missing Ang Moh's DNA is in the toilet or on some craps, then he 100% had been eaten and digested already.

Also the DNA of the culprits who ate the Ang Moh will be in the same feces.

Can not run one. Hard evidence that you ate someone, your own shit will betray you.
