Farmer sets himself ablaze

KOTA KINABALU: An elderly farmer in interior Sabah tried to commit suicide by setting himself ablaze inside his vehicle.

However, the 70-year-old man survived when the fire caused an explosion inside his Toyota Land Cruiser vehicle in the town area of Keningau at 2.30pm on Christmas day.

Keningau district police chief Deputy Supt Zahari Mohamed said the man was in critical condition and initially treated at the Keningau hospital before being rushed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital here.

He said the man, who is believed to have been depressed over financial and family matters, had doused himself with petrol.

He said police were investigating the case as attempted suicide.
