Published: Saturday December 4, 2010 MYT 3:54:00 PM Three nabbed after receiving kidnap ransom KUALA LUMPUR: Three people including a woman were nabbed by police in Rawang near here Saturday after receiving a ransom payment of RM30,000 to release a private college student whom they had kidnapped on Thursday. Gombak police chief ACP Abdul Rahim Abdullah said the arrests were made after the family of the girl dropped off the ransom money in the Bukit Bintang area here earlier Saturday. The 22-year-old student was abducted in front of her home in Selayang Baru here at 5.45am while waiting for a friend to join her on her way to her college. "The kidnappers contacted the family a few hours later and demanded a RM30,000 ransom for her release," he told Bernama. The family lodged a police report the same day. "Police took over and set a trap to nab the culprits," Abdul Rahim said. He said after the ransom payment was dropped off and the victim released, police trailed the three suspects, one of whom was on a motorcycle while the other two, including a woman, were in a Toyota Avanza. He said police nabbed the suspect on the motorcycle at the traffic light junction at Tesco in Rawang and the ones in the car about 500 mteres from there in the direction of Rawang at around 3am. "All the suspects are in their 20s. One was a factory worker, another worked at a lawyer's office while the other person was jobless," he added. – Bernama |

Sunday December 5, 2010 Trio arrested shortly after they collected RM35,000 in ransom By STEVEN CHIEW chiewcc@thestar.com.my KUALA LUMPUR: Police arrested three suspected kidnappers, including a woman, shortly after they collected RM35,000 in ransom for the release of a college student abducted several days ago. The three, aged between 19 and 22, were arrested at about 3.05am after their car overturned when they attempted to make a U-turn at a traffic light near a hypermarket in Rawang while being pursued by police. Sources said the victim, aged 22, was abducted in front of her house in Selayang Baru at about 5.45am on Dec 1 while she was waiting for a taxi to go to college. She was released near Bukit Bintang unhurt about 2.45am yesterday. Crime doesn’t pay: Three suspected kidnappers being brought to a magistrate’s court to be remanded to assist in the investigation in Selayang yesterday. It is believed the police followed the suspects from Bukit Bintang to Rawang after the kidnappers released the woman. Upon learning that they were being tailed, they tried to escape before the accident happened. It is learnt that after she was abducted, the kidnappers contacted her family and demanded for the ransom of RM35,000. The family paid the ransom on Friday. It is also learnt that after they kidnapped the woman, they used her handphone to send an SMS to her cousin sister saying that she was with a man in an apparent attempt to divert the attention of the police. End of the road Policemen inspecting the overturned car driven by one of the three suspects who kidnapped a 22-yearold college student on Wednesday. The vehicle overturned in Rawang yesterday when the suspects, who had collected RM35,000 in ransom, attempted to make a U-turn while being pursued by police. Gombak OCPD Asst Comm Abdul Rahim Abdullah said they searched the suspects’ house in Selayang Baru where the victim was held captive and recovered two motorcycles which were reported stolen. The three have been remanded for 10 days and all of them are being investigated under Section 3(1) of the Kidnapping Act which carries the death sentence or life imprisonment if convicted. |
