Snatch-theft suspect nabbed in his home

KUALA LUMPUR: Police arrested a lorry attendant for robbing and repeatedly stabbing a 19-year-old student when she resisted attempts to snatch her handbag. The 25-year-old suspect was nabbed in his house in Jalan 8, Taman Sri Sentosa here at 9.45pm on Tuesday. Brickfields OCPD Asst Comm Wan Abdul Bari Wan Abdul Khalid said initial investigation revealed the suspect had a previous record for motorcycle theft in 2006. He said police also seized two helmets and a knife from the suspect, who had been remanded until Sunday.

ACP Wan Abdul Bari said police had already identified the suspect’s accomplice during the robbery on Nov 11 and was hunting for him. “With the help of the suspect, we have identified his accomplice, who is believed to have gone into hiding,” he said here yesterday. In the incident, Toh Ai Ling and a friend were walking home after having lunch near Taman Seri Sentosa when two men wearing full face helmets on a motorcycle approached them.

When they tried to snatch her bag, Toh refused to let go and one of them stabbed her with a knife, thrice in her stomach and once on her back. She had since undergone an operation, in which her left kidney had to be removed due to the injuries. ACP Wan Abdul Bari said with the lorry attendant’s arrest, authorities had managed to solve at least 10 cases. He said the two men had dubbed their robbery gang as “Black”.
