Default 'Stressed' dolphin leaps out of aquarium tank in Japan

Dolphin leaps out of aquarium tank in Japan

VIDEO footage showing a dolphin leaping out of its tank during a live show in Japan has led one expert to claim that the animal was 'under stress' and wanted to 'end it', reports said. According to an AP story, the incident took place on July 4 at the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium in southwestern Japan. The video shows the dolphin performing with a trainer and subsequently leaping out of the tank on its own, leading to a scramble to get it back to water.

The video was taken by a tourist and sent to Ric O'Barry, an expert who earlier in his career captured and trained dolphins in captivity, but is now an activist and star of the documentary film 'The Cove'. O'Barry is quoted as saying in an AP report that the dolphin's habitat was so "unnatural it leaped out in desperation." "It wanted to end it. Why does a person jump out of a building?"

A scene in the video showing the dolphin - identified as a false killer whale species and named Kuru - performing with the trainer.
The female dolphin did not fall out at this point but later in the video.

A scene in the video during Kuru's performance. Hideshi Teruya who manages the dolphins at the aquarium, told AP that Kuru suffered minor scratches and bruises on its head and fins, but was in good condition with a healthy appetite.

Here when it happened: While everyone's attention was drawn to something else
(including the tourist filming the performance), Kuru makes a bold leap out of her tank.

The first trainer runs to the dolphin while anxious spectators get on their feet for a better look.

The end of the video shows a crane lifting the dolphin from where it landed
