Default Massacre in China
A teenager has been arrested after killing nine people and wounding four others in a knife attack in northeast China, state media reported Thursday.

The 17-year-old, who was identified only by his surname Li, barged into the home of his girlfriend armed with a knife following an argument and killed two relatives of the girl, the Legal Daily said.

As he left his girlfriend's home in Liaoning province's Xinbin county, he stabbed six more people to death and wounded five, it said. Chinese teen kills nine in knife attack: reports - Yahoo! News

We need to ban knives.

Also, the world media needs to turn Li into an instant celebrity, like ours did with James Holmes. Because nothing deters disgruntled loners like copious amounts of media attention.

I'm sure less people would've died if he had a gun.

Even less if he had a high capacity drum magazine. The real problem is that not enough people carry knives in china.
Someone could have tossed one and hit him in between the eyes before he killed so many people.

Yeah, but how many cases like this involve the "element of surprise". What you say is strictly speculation, but in most of the time the
perp catches the people completely off guard. Which kinda renders the "if he had a gun" argument moot.

So, then, we should ban knives, and rocks, etc. since you can always catch somebody by surprise. That's why cops don't need guns either.

Seriously, while the element of surprise gives an edge to the attacker, police and civilian defensive gun uses show that it's far from a game-changer; it isn't the only variable in the equation. Indeed, the element of "surprise" can work for the victim as well. It's only one of many factors. Furthermore, the attacker in China (also applies to Colorado) might be able to pick off a few people, but he might and likely would have been stopped before he managed to kill as many had one of his victims been armed. But, as in Colorado, they weren't permitted to carry guns, so his victims were sitting ducks.

Too late.

PHILADELPHIA, PA., CODE § 10-810 (2006). Use or possession on public streets or on public property of any “cutting weapon”, defined as “[a]ny knife or other cutting instrument which can be used as a weapon that has a cutting edge similar to that of a knife” prohibited, with exception for “tool or instrument commonly or ordinarily used in a trade, profession or calling” while “actually being used in the active exercise of that trade, profession or calling.”

I was at a bar on South Street not long ago on a slow Tuesday night. There were maybe 12 people in the place. The bartender was showing off his bladed weapon to a female patron. She took a switchblade out of her purse. Then a dude nearby whipped out HIS knife. And before I knew it EVERYONE in the bar was standing around that same spot, knives out, comparing blades etc. I couldn't believe my eyes. it was awesome.
