Enlightened-humane are two different things. Given fundamentalist mindset I would say that stoning is more humane and the Iranian fundamentalist are more enlightened than others who carry out less humane method of death sentences. I should add that this sentence not enlightened in my opinion, nor is stoning humane. Regardless of that fact, looking at people killing people with rocks and saying "well it's more enlightened than putting them in a bag with cats and beating them to death!" is crazy and I'm amazed that anyone could hold that position in any way that is not either completely dishonest or certifiably insane. |

One day, long ago in a town in Israel a woman was about to be stoned by the people. Upon hearing this, Jesus Christ went in front of the crowd and said,"He who has no sin, cast the first stone." Next thing you know, a frail woman with wrinkled skin beamed a stone at the woman's head. Jesus next reply was,"Mom!".

Taliban stone couple for adultery in AfghanistanBy AMIR SHAH, AP
posted: 1 HOUR 48 MINUTES , Afghanistan -Taliban militants in northern Afghanistan stoned a young couple to death for adultery, which a rights group said was the first confirmed use of the punishment here since the hardline Islamist regime was ousted in 2001. The Taliban-ordered killing comes at a time when international rights groups have raised worries that attempts to negotiate with the Taliban to bring peace to Afghanistan could mean a step backward for human rights in the country. When the Islamist extremists ruled Afghanistan, women were not allowed to leave their houses without a male guardian, and public killings for violations of their harsh interpretation of the Quran were common. This weekend's stoning appeared to arise from an affair between a married man and a single woman in Kunduz province's Dasht-e-Archi district. The woman, Sadiqa, was 20 years old and engaged to another man, said the Kunduz provincial police chief, Gen. Abdul Raza Yaqoubi. Her lover, 28-year-old Qayum, left his wife to run away with her, and the two had holed up in a friend's house five days ago, said district government head, Mohammad Ayub Aqyar. They were discovered by Taliban operatives on Sunday and stoned to death in front a crowd of about 150 men, Aqyar said. First the woman was brought out and stoned, then the man a half an hour later, Aqyar said. He decried the punishment, which he said was ordered by two local Taliban commanders. A spokesman for the provincial government also condemned the act. Taliban stone couple for adultery in Afghanistan |

That's not what you said though. You said: Enlightened-humane... Frankly, I'm not sure what the standard would be today in this world. The US has the death penalty and we torture people. However, we don't sentence people to death with torture. Is that humane but not enlightened? Or enlightened and not humane? I gotta go. |

Thank god for the Internet , without the digital tools this woman would be dead by now ..
Defecting diplomat says Iran in disarray over international outcry of Ashtiani stoning The international campaign to save Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, the Iranian woman sentenced to death by stoning, has rocked the regime and kept her alive, a senior Iranian diplomat said, as he applied for political asylum in Finland today. The impact of the campaign has been “more than you can imagine”, Hossein Alizadeh told The Times, as he defected out of disgust at the regime’s election-stealing and brutality. “Without that pressure she would have been stoned before this. I don’t have any doubt the international pressure on the regime is working.” The regime was worried not only about its image throughout the world if Ms Ashtiani was stoned, but also about its standing at home where stoning is a deeply unpopular punishment, he said. Mr Alizadeh, 45, has worked for the Iranian Foreign Ministry for 21 years and was second-in-command at the Iranian Embassy in Helsinki before he resigned last week. |

Sakineh Ashtiani sentenced to execution by hanging However : Sakineh Ashtiani sentenced to execution by hanging "The question should not be politicized. The Iranian judiciary system cannot be influenced by the propaganda campaign waged in the West," Now read this : Last week, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad reiterated that in Iran there is no death sentence, but then compared Ashtiani’s case with that of Teresa Lewis, the woman who was executed last Thursday in Virginia, United States, for a similar offense. And they let this guy coming in freely to the US (which in a way I highly respect..) and have his speeches at the UN ?? |

Iran, USA, Canada, it makes no difference when religious fundamentalists are in charge. If there was a survey of Americans and the question was how to deal with adultery and stoning was one of the options a certain percentage of US citizens would check that box. Lets not forget Alan Turing: "During the Second World War, Turing worked for the Government Code and Cypher School at Bletchley Park, Britain's codebreaking centre. For a time he was head of Hut 8, the section responsible for German naval cryptanalysis. He devised a number of techniques for breaking German ciphers, including the method of the bombe, an electromechanical machine that could find settings for the Enigma machine." Here's the thanks he recieves from his country for helping save countless lives: "Turing's homosexuality resulted in a criminal prosecution in 1952 — homosexual acts were illegal in the United Kingdom at that time — and he accepted treatment with female hormones (chemical castration) as an alternative to prison. He died in 1954, several weeks before his 42nd birthday, from cyanide poisoning. An inquest determined it was suicide; his mother and some others believed his death was accidental." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Tu...Welchman_bombe |
